Twice today already and once yesterday. Robot tells you to call and speak to a federal agent. Definitely scam call.
This is one of the newest scams. They call you to ask if you are aware that your social security number is under investigation and is in danger of being cancelled. They give you a name and badge number stating they are federal agents and you will be arrested for money laundering, drug trafficking, etc. They then try to befriend you and offer you help in tracking down somebody who may have stolen your identity. I played along for about 30 minutes, realizing the scam, but I wanted to see just how far they will go. Their main goal is to convince you of the wrongdoing, and explain to you why you will need to go to the nearest Target store that sells money cards. My guess is that once you are foolish enough to follow their instructions and load cash on the cards, they get the money on their end, (probably India) and you will never hear from them ever again. Beware, the federal government will never operate in this manner. When in doubt, just hang up. Don't worry, if you really are in the kind of trouble they indicate you're in, the local authorities will track you down soon enough.
