Had a call on my cell phone today asking for me by name and asking if several book titles were ones I had written. They said they were calling about a book festival of some sort, and that now that they had confirmed my contact number someone in California would be calling me with more details. Sounded fishy. Lots of voices and phone sounds in the background.

My book's already published, so thanks just the same. Bye!

Number called me 2x. I answered the first time, sounded like a "sales call" so I hung up. Then it called back and didn't leave a message. Next it called my husband asking for me. Saying something about leaving a book and needed to contact me about it. My husband called the number back. Auto message said number disconnected for suspicion of fraud. Now I google and find all this!

Scam book promoter but interesting that pop up ads shown when researching the number are for book publisher. Some strange collusion here?

All the above. I'm a veteran of victim scamming. Got me when I was a younger, more ignorant, fledgling writer. Hung up when I asked a simple question, "Why would you ask me to invest any money? If you are going to represent me, then wouldn't you get your cut when the buyer, i.e. HBO, commits?" click. NOTE: I entertained the conversation for self-education, definitely not to be scammed... again. In my experience, we writers already did the work - if our "stuff" is good, then show US the money. Not the other way around. BTW, listen for scam tips: ask how they got your number. Reply will be along the lines of "scout" provided. Really? Yawn. Ask if your agent can call them back because as per your agent, he/she handles these things (Even if you haven't an agent). Listen for the click. And seriously, writers, if you have writer's block, these calls can be free entertainment and even spark good material. Have fun at their expense for a change:)
