They called and a prerecorded message said my debt card had been locked and to enter my 12 digit card number to unlock...I hung up..sounds like a scam!!
Just got a call from this number on my cell phone. Robotic female voice said my debit card has been locked - "Press 1 to reactivate".
I got a call from this number claiming to be my bank. Said my card was blocked etc.etc. I pressed a number to see ifa person answered. I'll check phone company tomorrow to be sure that my phone number hasn't been lifted for charges. I called back and got an answering machine message from a woman with a carribean accent. Of course, no company or name was given in the message. Question: How do they know where I bank, or is that totally random?
I am listening to you all and yet I keep hearing how everyone called their Bank. I watched the news when they first informed about this new scam. They said that the caller locks into the phone that you answer and can record any info that you have or put onto your phones. The only safe phone lines are land lines. If you called your bank and gave them your account number, please contact them again after a few days preferably in person. I just want you all to be safe. I never call my bank but I know there are a lot of people who do. The news report also said something about thieves being able to get your info if you use a debit card in an ATM machine. Good Luck everyone. and God Bless.
I received a robot call on my cell phone # which I rarely give out. The message said my Washington Mutual Card account is locked, press 1 to activate. I've not been with WaMu for 5 or 6 years.
I just posted saying that I called back and a carribean woman taped the message. I'm guessing it is an offshore island scheme, then.
These are scam artist, the number calling you probably isn't their number. Scammers use the internet to hack company and residential private telephone numbers. If a system is connected to some network, more chances that these scammers (not hackers) gain access into the system using hacking tools that scan for open ports that allow them to use ones phone. This can be a cell phone that has connection to the internet as well. They use the trunk belonging to that number which enables them to make 'anonymous' calls so if a number is traced, it is traced to the number they are stealing service from. Best thing to do is piss them off. Don't give real information, give false information, call your bank for a dummy account that they use for investigative purposes. Dummy accounts are setup by some banks in order to track the movement of these scammers. Talk to them press 2 and give some random BS information to them, the longer they stay on the phone, the chances of them being tracked are greater. The internet logs can show more packets thus allowing law enforcement the evidence they need to prosecute them. No Doubt the police are monitoring them and have identified them, but they need a complainant and concert evidence to charge them otherwise it won't hold out in court. If you press 2 and speak to them, give them fake information and then tell them to [***]. The fact that there is something recording the packets (recording your call) the police can use this as evidence that an attempt was made by the scammer to con you, thus leading to criminal charges. Let these scammers sit in jail, and be denied entry and visa to every country in this world. Sooner or later they will get overwhelmed with false bank account information and may even give up on their con ways.
Received a call on my landline from this number at 11:45 AST. Woman with what sounded like an Indian accent. Claimed to be from a marketing resource company but wouldn't identify what company. Told her to remove me from her list and hung up.I would say they are branching out on what they are trying to do
