I just found this number on my answering machine from three days ago. After listening to it three times, and through all the garbled accent, I could hear she was claiming to be from Revenue Canada, and wasn't asking for my SIN number, but my client ID. Even real Rev Can agents only ask for the first two digits of that number. I'm amazed that NS, Canada even got a live person when they called, because usually scammers just use automated systems... they're too f***ing lazy. But especially do NOT give out that ID number, since they can do even more with that in combination with your SIN #. But please... an entire generation of e-mail spam should have taught us all how to smell a rat at the first stink.
How about you Concerned? Do you work for this scam number? A bunch of other posters here just said that Revenue Canada does NOT acknowledge that number.
I received this call this morning around 11:p.m. He said he was an agent from Revenue Canada, and wanted to verfied my address, then he said you moved recently and wanted my previous address, That is when my intuition kicked in and I told him I was not going to give any personal information over the phone. He then went on to say that that I could call this number to 1-866-864-5841 and that he's name was Garet(which he spelled) and his ID # was 12248. and for me to call. Well I know this is just another scam. Then I went online and keyed in this number and this is what I found. Hope this information will help someone.
I Received a call this morning 11:a.m. April 15, 2010. It was from this number 1-866-864-5841. He said he was an agent from Revenue Canada. He repeated my full name, the number and street, where I lived. He then went on to ask me if I had moved recently and I told him yes. He then asked me for my previous address. I then became very suspicious and told him I was not going to give him any personal information over the phone. He said he understood, and proceeded to assure he was from Revenue Canada. He also gave me this phone number and his name and ID number. His name is Garet (which he spelled for me) and his ID # is 12248. He wanted me to call Revenue Canada and verfied that this call was from Revenue Canada. I then went on line and keyed in the phone number and found a lot of other people who are receiving the same similar calls. I feel that this is a Scam, just another way to get personal information. Why would Revenue Canada call me for personal information, they already have in their possession? Thank you.
Was called by 1-866-864-5835. A man who did not identify himself ask for my husband. When I told him that he was not home, he informed me that my husband had to call Revenue Canada at 1-866-864-5841, between 8am and 8pm Eastern, with client ID and/or Social Insurance number to identify himself. When I asked him how we would know if we actually talked to Revenue Canada or not he did not answer the question. He just asked to know with whom he had left his message and hung up. Surely, in this day and age, it seems rather naive to assume that the public will simply hand over personal indentification numbers to unidentified callers. So, what else could it be but a scam?
I also found the same message on my answering machine earlier today. I don’t think I will call. Government normally communicate in writing, not asking for SIN over the phone.
Well... confusion solved... turns out the 866-864-5841 number is for real. It is a real Canada Revenue Agency number, but they contacted me by mail AND phone, without one acknowledging the other. The phone message was from a person who didn't speak english very well, and it was about a matter that had already been cleared up. The inter-bureaucracy mix-up led to me thinking it was a scam. Try phoning 1-800-O-Canada (1-800-622-6232), and they will identify the number. So, sorry Concerned, you were correct.
