Just got a call from them at 8:58 on a Sunday morning. They've been calling for months now, even though I have no bad debt and never have... obviously looking for someone with a similar name or something. Is a cease-and-desist order really the only way to end these jerks?

This is Portfolio Recovery debt collection. They buy junk debts and intimidate to collect past the statute of limitations. They can't take legal action to collect BUT if they can get you to dispute the debt they CAN START THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS OVER AGAIN AND TAKE YOU TO COURT!!! Best to not talk to them at all. They will also attempt to reset your debt by listing it as a NEW debt on your credit report. Beware. I don't know if trying to correct the date on your credit report qualifies as a dispute but the language around this new law is extremely VAGUE. You probably all know that if you pay then anything....even if it is a dollar....it also starts the clock over. They have tried to send certified letters as well, that gives them "permission" to take you to court. Keep an eye on court records for any unknown court case against you if you get certified mail from these people.

Good work. I have passed this along to a few more "innocent" friends who were actually shocked at the lengths people go to. An honest days work might really kill the portfolio people

FYI - The reason why they have so many numbers is because they have a PBX system. I worked for Avaya (a spinoff of lucent tech). They might only have 20 lines (as an example). but they can call Avaya or whoever their pbx company is, and have them change the phone numbers on each line - at will. they can have it display on your caller id ANYWAY THEY WANT IT TO WITH ANY NUMBERS OR LETTERS THEY WANT IT TO. That's what they pay their pbx company to do for them.

Port your numbers to Google Voice, their service will block any and all calls from this company

Switch to a phone company called voipo. They allow you to block any and all numbers in one click. Then just unblock nunbers you want to receive calls from. Problem solved. Easier than trying to block individual numbers. Now i only receive calls from people i want to receive calls from. No matter what number they use they are blocked unless it is on your unblock list.

yep portfolio bottom feeders. They believe that if they call you 5k times you'll cough up money the 5003 time or something. Let them waste their lives lol
