I received a telephone call at about 4:45 PM today from an unidentified man with a foreign accent. He Stated that my computer has a problem (it's a perfectly functioning IMac), and that he would tell me how to handle the problem. When I ssked who he was, he hung up. His phone number was recorded on my phone: 288 918 6555.

Received a call about 10:30 am from 288-918-6555 with caller telling me he was calling from or with Microsoft and that my computer had a software problem. Supposedly a download from my computer had been made and left the state of my software such that it would decline over time. He said in a strong Indian accent that if I was in front of my computer, he could help me fix the problem. I asked how I could be sure he was with Microsoft, and he avoided giving me an answer. He again asked if I was in front of my computer, I said no, but calll me back in 10 minutes and I would be. I immediately called MS support line and asked if this calll made any sense to them. They replied that MS did not make call backs unless a case file with my name on it had been previously established, i.e., had called in about a problem. From my telephone number they could immediately tell I had no case file established, and the man advised I not take the next call or pursue getting on my computer with the bogus caller. During my call with MS, the caller tried again apparently because I could hear it ringing in while I was talking. After hanging up with MS, I found two entries in my phone log for the caller's attempts. The earliest one was "number unavailable", and the second was this number.
