A friend of a friend gave me this number once, providing no context other than the name of the individual on the other end of the line: Charles. I gave the number a call and to my surprise, someone actually picked it up. I asked if the man’s name was Charles, to which he said yes. However, I now take that with a grain of salt. “Charles” began mumbling a barrage of incoherent chatter. He described himself as a Star Wars fan among other things, and provided me an update on the growing of his “cocaine plant.” I ended the call soon after, but would receive a few more calls from Charles as time progressed. Each call would include the heady and incoherent speech, and the discussions always revolved around some sort of unimaginable concept. The last I heard from Charles was early this year, 2020. I was discussing the prior events to a group of friends, who became curious at this Charles character. I gave him a ring and sure enough, the man answered! This time though, Charles would sporadically hang up and redial, leaving very little room for conversation. I dialed this number a final time about a month ago and was met with a dead line. My initial thought on the man that I knew as “Charles” was that it was merely an act. I figured that some unsuspecting callers (maybe given the number from someone like myself) dialed the number, asked for Charles, and the act would begin. I also postulated that Charles could truly be the person he projects on the phone, but that his behavior is a result of a mental illness or senility. I’m also reading that he is a “local crazy guy,” so this assumption doesn’t seem too unfounded to me. I am very curious of the whereabouts of Charles, but it would be invasive of me to press further. Regardless, I hope Charles is doing well in his pursuits, and that he ended up taking that boat trip to Poland.
