Fact is, any response -- including letting it go to your voicemail -- tells them it's a legitimate number. IMO the best option, barring a built-in number block that will prevent your phone even ringing when they call, is the option to answer with the operator three-tone "this number is no longer in service" recording. Alternatively, fax or modem tones. Of course, getting those options on a mobile phone might be a little tricky... Even if you did this, it costs them next to nothing to auto-dial a number, and only when someone presses "1" actually route the call to a human. It would cost them more to remove the number from their list, because that would mean that when you end service and someone else gets the number they would have lost an opportunity for new blood with the new user of the number. So give up. They will not stop calling. Even if FTC shuts them down, there's another right behind them on another spoofed-caller-ID number to pick up the slack. You would think the phone companies would see benefit to stopping them at the source, but that would require they actually prevent people from spoofing caller ID and then actually chasing down the operator of the real outgoing line.
I mean, would you EVER give a caller your credit card number??? What are we, in the dark ages????
There are naive people who do, since Americans are scammed out of millions of dollars every year. These scummy scammers are getting plentiful because there's a lot of money to be had and they can do it with little chance of being arrested. We who try to keep aware of these scams by looking at Web sites like this, have to put up with all this and be leary of phone calls, because of the ignorance of others.
My Caller Id showed "Local Call", an obviously ploy to get me to answer, and the area code is definitely not local. but I never do if the number is unknown to me. Thing is that these calls can originate from ANYWHERE, even outside the U.S. Scammers spoof numbers that are either completely made up, or use legit numbers or local area codes to get people to pick up. So you're probably wrong on the call origins.
Caller ID "Card Services" ... APR 29 at 2:00pm Eastern time. This call ended after one ring. It may have been blocked by a free service I subscribe to which is available to most Internet-based VoIP phone service users(I have Time Warner). Google "No more robocalls" to get more information.
I got a call from this number this morning, with ID of LOCAL. I didn't answer. YESTERDAY I got a call from 512-298-3982, with the same LOCAL Caller ID. I also didn't answer. What jerks!
Just got a call from "card services". I did not say hello right away and when i did there was no answer.
Same thing 347-916-3605 says it is a local call but comes up as New York. Funny thing, I am in the middle of Bankruptcy so these scum buckets need to go pound sand!! My attorney is having a field day. He has someone that works all day just calling these people back and giving them the 'what for,' and to leave their clients alone.
