I'm a recent graduate and received a call from the Jones Group trying to collect a debt for $250 from me, but I have received no written proof of where the charge came from or gotten any mail from them notifying me this debt existed. the woman i spoke to said HIPA rules kept her from telling me more. I also noticed while on their website that the phone number they list ends in -9998, whereas the phone number that i received a call from ends in -9997. Is this potentially a scam?? and if so, what can i do about it?
They called on a legitimate debt but made it sound like they was coming to arrest me. Lol. I will pay the debt but not to them.
I have received daily vm from these rude and ignorant people. They insisted I verify information, "to determine if we're speaking to the correct person. Last 4 of your social and address"? I know from experience that is all identity thieves need to become you. My daughter is a business banker and takes all kinds of security measures regarding her finances and she was recently hit on 3 of her credit cards at the same time. I told this guy, "Mr. Mack" to send a letter because I'm not verifying anything. If I'm the person they want and they think they have my address send a letter. And then I blocked their number.
I get calls several times daily from same person using various numbers stating, "law group", "representing state auditor", "personal matter", "charges pressed against your name", "coming to your workplace". I repeatedly tell them to stop calling. "Take me off your call list. I'm not verifying anything. If you think I'm the person you're looking for send me a letter at whatever address you have. If I'm her I'll respond. If I'm not I won't. Goodbye." (In my ever so sweet smiling while annoyed voice.) They NEVER identify themselves as a debt collector which set off warning signalso for me that they were not abut the right thing.

Caller/business not identified, message was on the verge of being threatening, regarding documents being mailed and response being demanded.
