They say they're your financial institution and suspect fraud activity, but need your credit card information to verify.
I got a call from 919-856-5005 that left a call back number of 1-866-961-1371 from Scott Stevens or Stephens at State employees Credit union on six forks road in Raleigh nc and he wanted to discuss activity on my husband's debit card. He said Felicia McMillan answered the phone when I asked their names. Very fuzzy Muzak on their phones when I was on hold and Felicia wasn't very professional with grammer which made me wonder if they were really SECU. I asked questions about them and did not give them any information. When I called my local branch I was told there were no flags on our cards.
Thanks for the information.....I got the same phone call and got suspicious. It pays to get on the internet and check out these numbers.I'll go by our local SECU to check out our account, but I don't think it will show any flags. There will be more and more of these types of fraud to take place. Ask questions to the caller on these types of phone calls. Any verification about you or your account should be done at the local SECU and not over the phone, especially a cordless phone.
This is the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union Fraud Prevention Department. I received a call from them today and they just wanted to verify that I actually did make some charges on my debit card. They are legit because they NEVER asked me for any personal info except for my first and last name. They just told me the charge amounts and business that charged the card, then asked if I was aware of these charges.
I called NCSECU about this number and as others have said they reported no hold on my card and that they had detected no fraud, but then they checked with VISA and verified what the person who called from this number had said at that point they transferred me to what the NCSECU operator called "VISA fraud services". The person there identified themselves as "NC State Employees Credit Union fraud protection".Given that, I believe that this is the number for a company that is working for VISA, or perhaps VISA itself, and handling fraud protection for NCSECU-branded VISA Debit and Credit cards. While they aren't NCSECU, they are a legitimate company. I think that they call themselves NCSECU to minimize confusion, which of course sends the suspicious among us to 800notes.com. :)
I paid a bunch of bills (prob close to $700) all in onr fell swoop online, and the said that when several charges come in all at once, they check to make sure it's not fraud. Definitely is NC SECU though. Didn't ask for anything other than my name, and questioned several charges I did this morning.
Caller said he was from the SECU Fraud Prevention Dept. Said his name was "Jim" of SECU and questioned my recent orders via Internet, eg., "Land's End– Was it accurate?", etc. He gave me a number to check out his call – 800-899-9723
This is SECU fraud prevention. They are employees of SECU, just another department. However, when you call into the Call Center, make sure you specify if the suspected fraud is related to your debit card or credit card (if you are aware). These are two differnt systems. Unfortunatly, some employees might not think to check the credit card systems and if that is where the suspected fraud happened then it will be thoroughly noted. But this is probably why SECU said they had no notation of fraud. Bad training.
I am the Fraud Prevention Manager for the State Employees Credit Union. I have 16 employees that call from this number to verify suspicious activity on SECU member's debit and credit cards. This is definitely legitimate, and we appreciate every member that calls us back to verify activity. When we are suspicious of the activity we will block the card until we are able to verify, so it is always a good idea to call back!!Thanks!
I received a call that showed up as 919-856-5005, with a message to call the NCSECU fraud prevention line at 866-961-1371. I did, and at the same time checked my account online--sure enough, there WAS a fraudulent charge posted to my checking account. I probably would have noticed it on my own in a few days as I do a lot of online banking, but I'm so grateful NCSECU caught it early and cancelled my card before more fraudulent charges could show up.
