I signed up for SS too, just before this call. I also received a postcard in the mail for a SS benefit meeting which I signed up to attend. I honestly believe the call was generated from the seminar and now I'm extremely suspicious. Grrr! Mean people suck! Despite what Sally, above says, SS advertises that they NEVER ask you for your SS# over the phone or via email. I'm thinking Sally works for the scammers. The phone message absolutely asked for my name, phone, and SS#. Please don't fall for this scam and report it if you know how.
Apologies to Sally! After a 45 minute wait, I got through to the SS office and they verified the call was totally legitimate. I gave the ss agent the phone number and extension and he gave me the contact name of Crystal. All is good and I personally am extremely relieved. Best to all! Whew!
I also received this message. If this is not legit then someone has cracked SSAs security since the email quoted word-for-word the answer to one of the narrative questions that I had on my application. would advise anyone who does not want to be contacted via phone or email about their application for SSA to go to the local office and sit all day or stand in line. If you file electronically, you should expect to get electronic communications.
Before you call it a scam, you could try calling the publicized Social Security website ( ssa.gov ) number at 800-772-1213 or 800-325-0778 and ask the representative if your emailer and phone number are SSA employees and phone numbers. If you wait is too long they will call you back on request.
I point out that the SSA only tracks citizens by SSN and uses other Personal information to correlate. This is unfortunate for obvious reasons which make us identity theft hardened individuals hyper nervous. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The military for many years did the same thing until lately. Now the military uses an unrelated trascking unumber on ID cards to elliminate possible overseight or gleening your SSN by unauthorized observers.
It is the SSA, responding to my online app for benefits. They give a callback number of 1-855-249-4175 and/or 1-800-772-1213; the 800number is the one that comes up on the caller ID. Had to have seen the original app, as there were statements at the end that no one but me would know about. So, while caution is always advised, I think this is on the up and up.
