It is an authentic call from SSA. We answer this line Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M EST
Never call a phone number given to you in an email, fax, text, or voice message. Foreign & domestic criminals spoof (fake) their caller ID & call you. The number may be correct, but not the caller. That is why you should NEVER give out personal, or financial information on a call you did not make. Look the number up. Verify it - then call.
I verified the 855-249-4340 number by calling the national Social Security Administration help line. This is a valid number for a real SSA regional office.
I got a call from the Tampa Workload Center as well, giving me the 855-249-4340 number to call back. I read all the posts here, which left some doubt in my mind so I took 10-15 minutes to contact my local SSA office. They were able to access my account on line, new all the issues that Tampa had called about, verified the number given above as well as the extension number given to me by the person who called from Tampa. It is a genuine number. If there were some way to prove that fact other than tell you that I have verified it I would do that. But what I've said is all I can do. If that's not enough, call the SSA info number given below or your local SSA office. Then call back to Tampa. It will only take 15-20 minutes to check it out for yourself. Or, take it from me, it's legit.
Verified this number this morning that it is indeed a number for the Tampa Workload Unit. If the folks at the Tampa center realized how this comes across as an attempt to get a SS#, perhaps they'd ask different questions. My phone caller asked me for my ss# immediately and I declined to give it to her as the number wasn't ID'd on my phone. I understand they need to verify it's a real person and accurate application. It's unsettling and comes across as a scam call. I offered to give her the last 4 digits and any other personal information, but she declined and gave me this number to call.
I filled out an online application, and got an email today from "at.fl.tampa.wsu.donotreply@ssa.gov" which does not look like an official SS notification. I'd received an email right after applying from a different address; this one looked bogus, so I Googled it, and found this thread. It sounds as though it's legitimate, from the comments here. If it is, the WSU should create a more official, professional email name; that might avoid this confusion and skepticism.
