While I can definitely understand about the scam mentioned above; however, this is not about simply accepting a collect call. The company that is calling will inform you who is attempting to reach you (it'll be the specific person speaking and leaving their name) and will walk you through setting up a prepaid account tied to your phone number.

This is a legitimate phone service ran by Securus Technologies for a lot of prisons in various states. If you actually answer the call, it will be a recorded message stating an inmate is attempting to contact you and then a recording will come on with the inmate stating his or her name. I didn't know or have anyone in prison either until I started getting calls about 2 hours ago. Listen to the phone call. I didn't the first time but did after the 2nd call came through & I'm glad I did.Some of the concerns raised as to this being a scam don't really have anything to do with this specific company. Only the person being called can set up the account. And, the account is only tied to your phone number -- unless you choose to add additional phone numbers. So, inmates don't have money put into "their" account to make collect calls. The money is put into an account that belongs to you and if you have an inmate calling from prison that uses Securus then it'll be put on your account.

Every time I have received a call from jail it says "collect call from ----- County jail will you accept" not will you add money to a prepaid card with no name attached.

If you want to place money on a family account, the best idea is to contact the prison that your family member is in (have their prison id information) and alert the commissary department that you would like to place some $$ on their (inmates) account. Do this directly. The prison facility will be able to direct your further. Anyone who places $$ on any automated call has set them self up for thievery. Good luck to you.

It's not a scam. It's a legitimate call from a prison inmate. I just got a call from this number and it was my brother (who is in jail).

The only person I know in jail works in jail. I've gotten the same call over and over again during the past month. The name is unrecognizable and in a different language. Clearly the wrong number and the only way to end the recording is to hang up. Don't waste your time on this number.

Got two calls from this number at 2 AM last night. Was rather furious. I absolutely don't know anyone in jail.
