Just had another computer scam call from this "company" wanting to "fix" my computer virus (translated steal information from my computer). I kept them on-line for 15 minutes playing the game before they hung up....
Same deal, claims he's from Microsoft and wanted me to open up my event viewer. From there he could tell me what applications are not working right. It's a total hoax. I have been in IT security for 10 years and in IT for 15. They eventually have you download a patch that will fix the problem which actually puts a virus on your machine. From there they can see everything you are doing in your machine including stealing you information and logins. Hang up and tell them to screw off. He got pissed when I called him out by the way. Screaming at me asking if I thought he was a fool. I told him yep and a fraud.
we were chatting with friends about internet security. Low and behold, I get a call from a heavily-accented Indian man who identified himself as Kevin, a certified Microsoft technician. He said they had been getting reports that my computer had downloaded viruses and he would help me work through the process to remove them. I told him I would call Microsoft directly and hung up.
