Claimed this was the department of legal affairs on behalf of a enforcement action on me. If this was legit it would be a 1-800 number with the department of legal affairs on the caller id not anonymous! And something legal would come in the mail
Received two voice mails to call 512-547-1244, Alex from Dept of Legal Affairs, US Treasury, very heavy indian accent, he called a third time and this time i spoke with him and he told me legal action taken against me and i should call the same number he is calling from. I thought that was very strange for me to call the same number. i then googled the number and thanks to everyone for the comments. I knew this had to be a scam.
I just recieved a call as well. Same tag line and heavy indian accent. Would not give me any information when I dug in. Then hung up. I called back did not leave a message and then an unlisted number called back and did not respond and hung up again
RE #512.547-1244 Ok so now it is the 24 of March! I called the 512 # yesterday afternoon 3-23-14 and his answering machine comes on "You have reached the US Treasury, leave a message. We are wondering why the US Govt - IRS - Treasury - are allowing this operation to continue. My EA called yesterday and said she read about this # on an IRS web site. It is said to be a HUGE scam, one of the biggest IRS has seen!! So with all the attention lately to the NSA spying on everyone… the govt can't seem to get this guy and his scam under control? I am beginning to think it is being sanctioned somehow! Not like the first time that the Federal folks have been complicit in illegal extraction of monies from the citizens… WHO WOULD KNOW? and who would honestly believe that they were in fact running this particular scam?? My first thought was that this Indian guy either works for them now or was previously with them in some official post?? I am considering all facets of this situation.
Dear Slim, Thank you for the information, it is appreciated and I will look further. I am a bit miffed that the same actual faked phone # is still in use - on going and just trying to consider all angles to make sense of it all especially the difficulty in tracking the actual callers.
this is what my EA suggested " So if you DO get another call from him, tell him that you want his full name and IRS-issued ID# and the name of his supervisor so you can "check him out" before talking with him any further. At that point, he'll probably just hang up and start calling someone else."
Received four calls today from a purported *Charles Hendrix* (thick Indian, Pakistani? accent) and claiming to be from *Department of Legal Affairs* and warning of legal action if I failed to respond. I filed a complaint on the FTC scam caller website and here.
Well folks, today his name is James Martin. One would think that a James Martin's native tongue would be English, not Hindi, but I try not to profile. He mentioned "an unfortunate action that has been started in (sic) your name". I thought it was nice of James to express his sympathy for me. But perhaps The UST should offer remedial English to its staffers, so that they won't use phrases such as "a delay in calling us back might end up into a legal mess for you." Lastly, someone should tell poor Jimmy that, since the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury technically does not have a "Dept. of Legal Affairs", he won't be receiving his paycheck this month. Come on. These guys aren't even trying. Tempted to call back and have some fun, but I won't. I'll just register yet another complaint with the FTC, FBI and NYSAG'.
Called asking for my dad, heavy Indian accent, said his name was Charles Hendricks, didn't even pronounce his name properly. When I said Dad is out, asked for his cell number. I refused to give him the number, asked to take a message.Said he was from the "department of legal affairs", that he was calling on a legal matter, which was filed against Dad's name.Caller ID said the number was actually 7-778-880-8481.
