my calls started after I made a donation to Obama's campaign too. and when i answered the call, they asked me to make a 1 time donation of a larger sum for Obama's campaign. in my instance, it absolutely had something to do with my donation. it's how they got my number and they've been hired to get more money for Obama.
This number calls at least 4-5 times every single day of the week at all times of the day - I don't pick up and they never leave a message but it is getting worse. I am on the do not call registry as well - obviously doesn't work.
They call me two to three times a day, every day, and have for the past several weeks. Horrible. I cannot get them to stop; I've filed FTC complaints repeatedly; I've been on the Do Not Call list for many years. No matter.
Telemarketers calling on behalf of charities are EXEMPT. You can read this on the DONOTCALL website under more information >info for consumerswhere it also states thisDNC – Third Party Callers on behalf of Charities However, if a third-party telemarketer is calling on behalf of a charity, a consumer may ask not to receive any more calls from, or on behalf of, that specific charity. If a third-party telemarketer calls again on behalf of that charity, the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000 .NEVER DONATE OVER THE PHONE TO TELEMARKETERS. !) They KEEP up to 85% of all donations they generate - only 15% percent actually goes to the CharityTOO MANY SCAMS out there - no way to know if a the caller is LEGITIMATE or not
I used to work for telefund in Austin Texas, it is an automated dialer so most of the time the person calling you has no idea how many times you have been called that day. It isn't supposed to dial you more than 3 times in one day, but sometimes you are on the list twice. The lists come from the causes that are asking for support. This company does not make thier own lists. My suggestion if you do not want to hear from them again is ask what campaign they working on, and ask both Telefund and the company they are working for to put you on thier do not call list. Otherwise you might just hear from a different version of Telefund should that organazation change companies. Also if you do get another call, it could be one of two things, 1. It is a different organazation with your info that hired Telefund (if you are with ASPCA and DNC for example you might get 2 different calls (which is 6 a day). or 2. Due to some error in the system you are in one organazation several times (if you have different phone numbers listed under one organization) then you just have to tell the person calling that you want to be on the do not call list more than once. But leagally the caller has to put you on it if you ask.
I can tell you from working at Telefund that they are legitimate, and although they do make some money (so they can pay thier employees like me, because what you make is entirely dependent on how much you make for the organization) I can say for a fact that they do not take 85% that is a myth. If the number were that high the DNC would not hire them they would get thier own volenteer staff. Giving money to Telefund is just as safe as going online and donating there. There are always people involved and you give information over the phone or over the internet at your own risk. But they are equally safe and the website you donate to also takes money to support just like the telefundraisers. If you ever give any money to any charity or political organization a large portion is going to go right back into fundraising( it doesn't matter if it is over the phone or by internet or if you walk up to a person and hand them a check). Any percent I give would only be guessing and there are some scams out there I agree, but Telefund is not one of them. There are ways to tell if they are legitimate or not, one way is checking to see that thier website is real, talking to the caller's manager helps, they can give you business information and you can call back on another line. How can you donate at all living in such fear?
