Some lady claiming to be from Microsoft's corporate office called claiming that my operating system code had expired. I told her the number was new and wasn't registered at the time that the operating system was installed so she had no way of knowing that it was or wasn't (I had just gotten my home phone). She called me a [***] and hung up.She had a thick Indian accent. Had received a similar call from the number before telling me I had a deadly computer virus on my computer that could bring down the internet.
When I talk to these creeps, I try to make it a little fun. When they say there is something wrong with my computer, I ask "which one?". Then I proceed to tell them I have a server farm with 3000 computers, and ask them the IP address of the offending computer. This is usually when I hear a click. Or, I pretend to go along with them, while not even touching my computer. Or, other times, I start asking them about their computer. Sometimes I have a MAC, or no computer at all. You would think if you told them you had no computer, they wouldn't call again. What really makes them mad is when I ask them right off why they are lying. I tell them I know they aren't from Microsoft. Oh, that burns them up. The point is to occupy as much time as possible, so they can't harm anyone else. The same goes for Carmen and her friends from "Card Services"... Keep life fun.
I have lately received the same message of a recorded "goodbye" in a woman's voice from unavailable. So it IS the same people. thank you for your post about this
Called at 7:30 AM from World Wide Web to report a security threat. He wanted me to go to my computer and let him show me the threats so he could fix them. Said no thanks. It sounded like a scam. Didn't know if they were trying to sell something or gain access to my computer.
I keep getting calls from 646-712-3456, and as soon as I pick up the phone to say hello, I hear strange noises and then a disconnect. I have called the number back, and get a recording that this number is no longer in effect or has been disconnected. How can I get a call from a number that is disconnected? I get these almost every day.
Same message from this number - woman telling me she was from the World Wide Web and that I had a virus on my computer that she needed to access or my computer would crash in 1-2 days. She needed me to turn on my computer (the one I was working on when she called) to access the server. I told her that it sounded shady and she got defensive and asked me if I wanted my computer to crash. I told her she could call me back tomorrow and she said "no, I have to fix this now". Tried to get rid of her politely, but she was persistent, so hung up on her. Wow. I hope people don't fall for this...
Called to state that he was from Microsoft calling in regards to my operating system on my computer. Told him I did not have a computer, he then asked if I had a laptop and I told him no and he said thank you ma'am, have a nice day!I do have several computers, but that is not his business, and if I need help with any of my computers, I WILL INITIATE THE CALL!!
