Caller ID says "Cell Phone NY". The guy asked me questions about my PC. When I asked him the same questions he said I was wasting his time, and hung up.
I just received the same call. The women said she was calling in response to an error message that was sent from my computer. I asked her which one and she said it was the main one that was hooked up to the router. I said we have WIFI so none of them were hooked up directly. She didn't understand what that meant. Since my computer has been very slow, I logged on. I let her walk me through a couple of steps. When my computer was slow to respond and transferred me to her manager. He asked me to run the teamviewer.com application. I told he I was not confortable letting view my computer and he had to give me evidence of my error. He get upset and hung up on me.
646-612-3456Heavy middle eastern accent, calling from an obvious, lots of background noise, call center. Claims to be calling from Microsoft. Tells me their main server (hah) has been receiving error messages from my computer. These messages alerted Microsoft to "many viruses on your windows systems". "Bad people were using my computer to steal from me".I asked and he confirmed that this was on my Windows desk top system and my virus protection program wasn't able to protect me. When he confirmed that, I let him have! I told him that he and his fellow scammers were the "BAD PEOPLE" and I was smarter than they could ever hope to be. Plus I run Macs!
Same number leaves a message three, four times a week. Sounds like a call center but can't distinguish what they are saying.
Individual with a thick accent called my cell phone, telling me viruses were detected on my computer. (I was no where near a computer, unless you count my 8 year old cell.) I thanked him for calling, because my computer had just erupted in FLAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, I needed to find a fire extinguisher! He kept right on going, telling me to connect to some website, or something. I asked how to do that, when the keyboard is MELTING?!?!? He kept telling me how to get on this web page, or whatever. I mentioned that smoke was now coming out of the monitor, and said I'd have to put him on hold while I called for emergency services. I did not really put him on hold. I just wrang off. Heh, heh, heh.
This is a SCAM. They want you to go to their web page and allow them to clean your system of viruses. They then take control of your machine and plant a virus that only they can fix for a cost. Since your machine is now a zombie, if you refuse, you are down for the count. When you call back the price has doubled..and so on.The company claims either to be from the World Wide Web, or the Windows Help Desk, or Microsoft Trouble Team; the name changes every few weeks. They also spoof numbers so blocking them is pretty futile after the first few calls. Not to mention that they get really nasty if you question them as to what they are doing.
