I called Chase and they said the number is legit. They are just doing credit check and wanted to confirm certain info.
It's legit. I received a call becuase I applied for a card and did not want to give me info to a random caller. I called back to where I applied and they gave me this number. Of course they will ask for personal info becuase there is a credit card application or existing card in question, that is the only way they can verify you. However, I did get a reference # so as not to have to give my ss again in this matter
I recieved a call from this number and was suspicious. I talked to United/Chase and they said they did not know of the number. After looking at this website, I realized that I did have a fraud hold on all of our credit reports. This was the reason for the call. I had applied for a credit card and they wanted to verify that I had actually applied for the card. They verified our address and who holds our mortgage. I think it is legit.
I also received a voicemail from this number asking me to call back about a SouthWest credit card I had applied for. I called back and supplied the reference number that was left on the message and they started asking me a bunch of personal credit-related information. I told them I wasn't going to give them any, since I had no idea who they were. They said this was no problem because there was a letter coming, too, or if I already had another Chase card, I could call the number on the back of the card and use that to call in. That is what I did, I ended up back with the same person, and it is because I had put a fraud alert on my accounts at the three credit agencies. If you get a call like this, regardless of which airline or other Chase partner it claims to be from, call the number on the back of your existing Chase card(s).
I received a call on October 22 from "Chris" from the "Fraud Prevention Department servicing Southwest Airlines." She asked me to give her a call at 800-278-8830, and to give her "reference number 090924505096." I called Southwest Airlines. This is an attempt to get personal information. Strangely, it followed my recent application for a Southwest Airlines Chase credit card, as I frequently fly with that airline. I let Southwest know that -- perhaps -- someone at Chase is in league with scam artists -- at the least, providing the scammers with valid phone numbers and email addresses.
I got this call for a Buy.com card I had applied for in the last week. I called Chase and they confirm that this is one of their numbers and they serve Buy.com. So it looks like this is a legit call, but perhaps - based on the other comments here - they need to learn how to convey info better.Regarding "being cagey": if they (Chase, legit) are cold-calling you (possible fraudster), then they clearly don't want to give out more info that would help you accomplish the fraud better. So, as others have said: when in doubt, call the number on the back of your card and have them route you appropriately.
Everyone relax... this is a valid Chase Fraud Department phone number. They validate any credit applications and such with a letter, phone call or email and they ask you to call them. They already have your information in front of them and ask a number of verification questions. I asked a few questions in return (they should know if they have my true application in front of them) and since I did actually apply for something obviously I know they are legit. In my case they were validating my application which was placed through amazon.com and they knew all of that as well. So, don't panic. Ask the right questions. "I don't recall where I applied for credit can you please refresh my memory", "Can you tell me if I put a cell phone contact number on the application?", etc... etc... Hope that helps...
