I received in the mail (USPS!) an unexpected invoice from UPS containing the contact phone number (800) 811-1648. The invoice was legitimate - not fraud - but a UPS employee apparently fumble-fingered the account number when someone shipped a package with 3rd party billing. Apparently you can bill to an account with no other information than a shipper number, which does not even contain a check digit. So the invoice came to me instead of to the correct responsible party. A call to UPS was all it took to rectify the situation. The invoice even contained the correct account number in a field labeled "total for shipper". The correct number differed from my account number by a single digit. You might have an account at UPS and not even know about it. If you print UPS or USPS labels online at eBay or PayPal, you might have a UPS account you don't know about. You just might want to call UPS and close the account, to avoid becoming a victim of one of their frequent keying errors.
BIG SCAM: I received the same type of letter today in the US Mail for $36.41. It looks like a legitimate bill but I never use UPS and when I do I pay at the store. It has a P.O. Box of 894820 in Los Angeles, CA. I'm located in San Diego, CA and am wondering if this is the latest scam that's circulating the US right now if other people in the mid west and east coast are receiving the same thing. [***]!
used ups site for estimate to ship- them went to store and paid cash- now have 2 charges for estimate pending- called ups- and wes never transferred- called back and got this 800 number- part of site works for tracking of package but not for dispute- will always go to a ups store from now on
got one of these letters today myself. somebody shipped something from Alaska to mainland. seems like twice and between some commercial accounts. kinda clueless how did I get involved.i guess it is scam, but worse if it is UPS mistakes. if so, i'd say there is way too many fck-ups with their data entries. gonna ask for apologies & free gift or something.
Be ware of this email. Got the email this morning with the same number. Also beware of scanners posting instructions on sites like 800notes assuring people, everything is cool. If you're not sure, look up the posted contact number published. UPS is a pretty connected company. Here is the email I recieved. Also notice how both of the tool free numbers are formatted. That was a dead giveaway. Also will point out other red flags.UPS Billing CenterThis is a post only email; please do not respond to this message.Dear UPS Customer, (IF YOU KNOW THIS IS AN LEGITIMITR ACOUNT THEN WHY NOT ADDRESS ME PERSONALLY?Your most recent UPS invoice. To view/download your invoice, see the attached document.
