This company will never believe you aren't the person they are looking for. I suppose they think phone numbers are like SS numbers - assigned for life. your only choice may be to change your home phone number and even that won't guarantee they cant find you. Even if it is unlisted your new number can be found by this agency. My wife wonders why the government can't hire collection agents to go after Osama Bin Laden. You can't hide from these people and you can't make them go away.
I have been getting tons of calls from these people, I had a roomate that ran up a bill and they keep calling for him, I have told them many times that he does not live here and he moved out over 3 years ago I asked for them to remove me from there system to and they keep calling, they even go as far as to try to get my information and where I work, What do they need that for? I myself owe a few bills and I have dealt with tons of these type of people, I know that they are just doing a job but they need to start to have someone manage these companies, They are rude when they call, They try every tactic to try to get information and or payment, They threaten with lawsuits and more, I had a man call me just over a year ago and he tried almost everything to get money, He even went as far as to see if I can borrow the money from friends or relatives to pay my debt. I know that if you have bills that you are responsible to pay them but sometimes money is not always flowing in and you are not able to get caught up with bills. And sorry but my home and food come first and it does not help having people call you 10 times a day to keep telling you that you owe money.
I requested to see my credit report from Equifax this fall because I was naughty when I was younger and I'm in the process of cleaning up my past. My grandmother recieved a call from these guys this morning as we have the same initials and they found her in the white pages. They gave her the reference number, which I have matched on my credit report. These guys are legit, unfortunately! It's unfortunate that they call wrong numbers and harass the $hit out of innocent people... but if they are looking for you, chances are you do owe funds.Best bet is to request your credit report (you are entitled to one free report per year) and double check your file. You can do this via Equifax's toll free number: 1-800-465-7166. The report comes in the mail in about 10 business days. Everyone should be doing this anyways as it helps deter identity theft. And visit www.equifax.ca for more information.
These guys are far from "legit". They lie to people and they try to make it out as if they can ruin you at any second which is not true, in order to take any action against you they need a court order which many of them are unwilling to take the time to peruse. Also they call you and ask for personal information out of you. Then when you ask what kind of business they are, they claim they cannot tell you due to the privacy act. Well I am a law student and I have read the privacy act and there is nothing in there that would prevent a company thats calling you from identifying who they are and what they are calling about. And yes some people owe money, but that does not make them evil people, in this bad economy lots of people have debt or will have debt and thats unfortunate. But these collection agencies have to learn that people aren't usually in debt by choice or desire to be. Some people just fall on hard times and thats all there is to it.
I just got a call from them, they had our name(both first and last) which is a blocked name through Shaw. They gave us a 'members' quote, saying thanks for joining and to just call them back quoting our member number. Good thing I found this forum before calling them back. Wpg, Feb.17-09
They called me and left a recorded message:"Hello, (my full name), we are very happy to have you as a new customer at Activ Kapital. Please call us back quoting your reference number" Then they left some number. What do you think? Scam? How the hell do they know who I am?

I got a phone call from this number 6 weeks ago. The girl told me I had a debt with a company I've never done business with. Ever. All they could tell me was the debt is 10 years old, and interest has been accruing daily since 1999. I laughed so hard at this poor girl. I told her I have no knowledge of the debt, and she had no other information available other than the business name and the amount. I told her our conversation would not go any further, unless she could supply more information to be in writing. She said it was too late for that, as a letter was already mailed out the day before the phone call. So I waited for the letter.I received a letter from Aktiv Kapital the following week. The letter was dated 3 days AFTER our conversation, and post-marked 4 days after the original call. The letter didn't have any information on it, other then an offer to settle for half of the current amount owing (including the 10 years of interest, of course). The next day, I mailed a registered letter making it clear I have no knowledge of the debt, and claim no ownership to the debt. I also challenged them to take their claim to court, to test the debt against Ontario's Statute of Limitations law for old debt. (Debts prior to 2004 have a 6-year limitation period from the date of last payment. After that, the debt is uncollectable unless another payment is made or ownership of the debt is claimed).I also demanded all correspondance to me happen in writing. They received this letter over 4 weeks ago.I have had no response from them until today, when they called.A computer said "Hello", followed by a dial-tone.
