8Jan2015 around 1130A, central time. Caller stated, in perfect English, that IRS was filing a lawsuit against me. I was instructed that I was to call 253/214-3386 immediately. Notice I was told to call back to a number that was not the same as the number they called me on(or at least, not the same number as Caller ID showed).--------------------------------------------------------They said this was my final notice. I'm sure the IRS doesn't work this way, do not be fooled. The female voice that's on the recording sounded slightly robotic, that is, almost as tho it was a machine-generated voice. I'm not sure if it was machine generated, the voice sounded almost, but not quite, natural.---------------Caller ID showed the number as 895/593-8344. Probably a spoofed(faked) number. Caller ID also showed the caller as "Name Unavailable".--------------------------------------------------A while back, there was a similar scam, supposedly from the IRS, but the caller had a thick accent. Perhaps these are the same people, now using a synthesized voice, to bypass any doubts a bad foreign accent might raise?--------------------------------------Do not be frightened, do not call the number they give you, so that you can call back. Don't call back, tell friends, family, acquaintances about this new scam. ====================================For goodness sake, do NOT call them back. You can pretty much be sure they will ask you to forward money in some form that will be untraceable. If you are in trouble with the IRS, there are ways to work with them. These callers are NOT the IRS, they are scammers. Don't bite!===========================================Need to talk to the IRS? I can pretty much assure you that these people are NOT the IRS. Look up the legitimate number for the IRS in a phone book or elsewhere. These people are NOT the IRS, they are scammers.
Replying to my own message:(or adding to it)Remember, when you call a number, you never know exactly where it is, and you never know if the party you call could be charging $5 a minute, a nice way for them to take your money. Somewhere on this site, it says that overseas calls are usually begun with "011", but there are some numbers, like Puerto Rico numbers, that don't have the obvious "011" thing. You could get charged $5 a minute, these scammers can simply place their "fees" on your phone bill. Incredible, no?----------------------------You know these people aren't legitimate, so don't get hung up on details of area code and such. DON"T CALL THEM. You have nothing to gain. Even if you don't get hit with huge phone charges, why would you encourage these thieves?
