Nobody answered. Then I heard a beep followed by a recorded female voice that said "Good bye".
Had one call that was silent then the recorded "Good bye." Another call, person picked up and said he was from the "Windows support department." We discussed what that meant (which he basically wouldn't explain) then he told me they were seeing a lot of virus activity on my computer." Yeah, right. I told him I recognized a scam when I heard it and hung up.
Received a call from this number. A man with a thick Indian accent told me he was calling from Microsoft Support. He went on to explain that I recently purchased a computer and my "Windows" was giving a security error, which they picked up and we need to fix ASAP. I asked him how he got my phone number and he replied that because I'm a "Microsoft Customer", they had it on file. I told him I didn't purchase any computers from Microsoft. He then asked me what Operating System I am running. I told him I'm rocking Linux (Ubuntu ;o), after which he realized I saw right through him and hung up.It's a scam. Beware.
I've received several calls from this number. Each one has involved someone telling me in broken English that I have been hacked by Russian hackers. I imagine they'll try to get you to download something invasive to "fix" your computer or ask you for personal information.Beware.
993-933-3214 has called me every other day for the last 2 weeks. After this series of missed calls, I finally was able to answer today and speak with Jed... or Jeb or Ted, whichever name he mumbled over an obviously long, long-distance call. In a very thick accent he immediately warned me that they were receiving notification that my computer was currently downloading malware and asked if i was in front of my computer. Explaining that I was not, I asked if he would hold while I fired it up and also requested a call-back number in the event of disconnection. At first, he completely disregarded my request until I repeated my question. He then agreed and read off "1-22-09-676-4459." Unfamiliar with such a series of numbers and a bad connection I read them back but then he said, "1-20-967-4459" as quickly as he could followed by, "did you get it? Got it? Are you in front of your computer?" I said, "Thanks Jeb, I just needed to know what phone number to reach you at to report this scam because the number identified on the caller ID is supposedly changed or disconnected when I return your missed calls. Do not call again...please," and hung up. As I went to hit End Call, I heard him say, "F*ck you," but hung up before I could respond. Answer if only to tell them do not call again. I'm registered on the Do Not Call list so hopefully this will be my last complaint about this "company" I did not even stand a chance of catching the name of.
Said his name was Charles and my computer was infected with malware. Tried to sell me a"FIX" for $699.00.Also said he was with "Norton" and this problem was through Microsoft.I did call both Norton and Microsoft to let them know. Calls stopped for 2 weeks but have started up again.
