We just got a call from 206-266-2992. CID said Amazon, so I thought it might be legit, but when I picked it up the man said he was calling because we had recently renewed my husband's subscription to Atlantic Monthly, which was true, but of course not through Amazon, so I was very suspicious. He said that when we sent back the renewal card we had not specified a payment method. Then I knew it was a scam and he was fishing for a credit card number. I told him I didn't want to talk with him because I would have included a check with any renewal. He promptly hung up. Spam calls are annoying enough, but hijacking Amazon's number is rude, and the thing that bothers me most about this is that they seem to know who subscribes to which magazine. If he had been guessing, I would have expected him to say "Time" or "Sports Illustrated," but how many people in Seattle subscribe to Atlantic Monthly? Some, but probably not a large number. This, in combination with other people's comments saying the caller named the correct magazine, including the Economist, makes me think these guys are either in cahoots with the magazine renewal processing company, or they hacked a computer, or something similar.
I have gotten several calls from this number about my Atlantic Monthly subscription which I ordered from Discount Magazines dot com a few years ago. The guy said that his company had gotten a renewal slip from me and I told him that many people had reported calls from his number as a scam. I told him that I never sent in a renewal slip and that this was a scam. He sounded apologetic saying he didn't know and I should tell as many people as possible about it. So I recommend that you tell them that you did not sent in a renewal slip and that you and everyone that googles their number knows its a scam and don't call you back.
I have a feeling that it is much worse than people trying to sell magazines. I googled Amazon customer service telephone number b/c I had been having trouble ordering. I called this number as it was listed for Amazon. The guys talked to me a long time, had me go through steps on my computer, asked for email address and asked me to type in password. He then wanted me to do more things on the computer but I started feeling like it wasn't Amazon. He put on his supervisor and I asked both guys if it was Amazon customer service and they said it was. I think it is an identity theft thing. They also wanted to know if I did on line banking. They both told me I was being hacked by someone living in Germany.
I had the same thing as the one above me...mine was an order cancelled (spelled wrong though) and placed on June 8, 2017. I called the number (206) 266-2992 on my work phone to see what it was while looking at my amazon account page and looking at previous orders and if anything cancelled. There was nothing in that spot...as the guy was asking me for information on my account...I told him I wasn't giving him information because I feel it was a scam and he said its not a scam its really Amazon...I hung up and deleted all payment options on my account until I need to order something. People are unreal these days.
I called this number after it came up in google results as Amazon's customer account number. It is a very convincing scam, with automated phone message options (press 1, 2, 3, 0), and wait music. The person I spoke with said his name was Joey Depin (not sure of spelling). I noticed he picked up the call immediately with no wait time, and then when we were talking I felt suspicious. He asked for my name, e-mail and billing address. I called Amazon's official number after and they told me it is not an Amazon number.
