Companies often use special trunk lines that are outgoing lines only. They will give you that message of non working number if you call it back. Work for a phone company, that's how I know. :)
Called me three times in a row, almost immediately after filling out a refinance request for my current lender Green Tree. Since they leave no message, I will not call back.
The caller was obviously using a "spoofed" number -- that is, having his/her caller ID show a phone number that is not actually the one he/she is using. The practice is illegal, but all too common. Some of the big scammers go from one spoofed number to another, and are almost impossible to catch. The so-called Indian scam, which called people and claimed they were going to be arrested for nonpayment of a debt unless they paid up right away to the fraudulent "lawyers", used dozens, possibly hundreds, of spoofed numbers.
I was out of town in Virginia, they called my home in California at 5am, my wife answered, they told my wife they were trying to confirm a purchase, had last 4 digits of my credit card and name, wanted to confirm with me. My wife gave them my phone # (thinking it was legitimate), she also called the credit card company to verify, turns out they were trying to access my account but did not have the security questions and phone #'s. We cancelled the card. The credit card Co gave us the last digits of another phone number they called in on, (###-###-1206), they would not give us the whole number they called in on.
Chase calling to get me to refinance my home loan. What they don't tell you is if you take their refinance offer, which is free, it gets reported to the credit agencies as a hardship refinance harming your credit severely. It's part of their settlement deal with the government for the housing / mortgage collapse several years ago.
Recieved two calls, one after the other at 9:15 am today (Sunday). Woke me up but didn't answer. As soon as I saw it was from Los Angeles, I didn't pick up. Weird though after reading comments. Glad I didn't answer but not happy about being woke up!!
The number is from Los Angeles. However, this means nothing as it can be generated from anywhere in the world. The accent was Indian. They called at 3:00 am and again at 3:30 am. I have a child who just had an organ transplant and this was very rude waking us up. They k ew my name and called my cell. The American governments should protect its citizens against such vile people.
AegisPeople called and left a long message on my answering machine. It was a woman with a very strong accent (Phillipine, I think) who spoke very fast so the only words I could glean out of the entire message was Chase, Financial Needs and an 800 number to call back. I have no plans to call back. If Chase (who I do actually do business with) wants to help me with my financial needs they can call me from a phone number that has a Chase Caller ID, and have someone call me who knows how to speak on the phone. I don't care if they have an accent as long as they speak slow enough for me to understand them. That goes for people without accents as well. I'm blocking this number on my phone. BTW - I don't appreciate my bank outsourcing my information to a 3rd party so my next complaint is to Chase.
