Same scenario, tried to pass by as my CEO. They first sent me an email then I got a text.
This number impersonated my boss through my work email asking for my cell, and requesting I execute a task for him. Text asked me to buy gift cards but the phone number seemed off and the whole thing felt wrong. Gave my company a heads up.

same exact scenario. I was tempted to text back and say I bought the gift cards but figured it's better not to feed the trolls...
They attempted to pass as my boss to order me to buy eBay gift cards and send them over a picture text. Clearly a failed attempt to scam me. Probably a proxy number from someone in India. I did enjoy making them believe that I was on my way to buy them :)
I responded to an email from my boss asking for my phone number, before realizing it was a spam, I responded with my phone number. They proceeded to text me and try to scam me further from this number afterwards.
