I am taking my letter from Prudential to a local Prudential office tomorrow to check it out. I called the office and they have the claim forms there and will guide me through the process. Will be able to find out if it is a scam or not at that time. I also called the Prudential Insurance office phone number listed on current policies (not the number on the letter) I have and it seems to be on the up and up. However, until I visit the insurance office I am not going to count on anything. When I called the 800 Prudential number I insisted that the give me an amount of the policy and they did and since I would not provide any info they said that they would mail out a claim form. I did not give out a SSA number. Policies get lost and forgotten so am willing to visit my local office to check it out. I thought I kept good track of our policies, but there is always a chance that I forgot something or lost one. Am sure you father didn't keep secrets, he may have just forgotten one. Good luck to you all.
Went to my regional Prudential office yesterday and spoke with an insurance agent and this isn't a scam. He did the computer stuff and talked with the unclaimed insurance department of Prudential and sure enough there is a policy that I am the beneficiary on. We filled out the claim form and he said that I would have the money in 5 yo 7 days. Did not cost me a dime for him to check it out and fill out the paper work. So, am hoping that some of you will come back and check this site and see that it worked for me. It was a policy that we had forgotten all about and in fact thought that it didn't exist any longer. So, it is worth doing. But I was thinking it was a scam and am glad that I went to a for sure Prudential office and did the work there. It was a nice sum of money. It would have ended up in the state controllers unclaimed money thing and would have cost me time and money to get it from the state. Good luck you all
We received the same type of letter in March 2013. NBC news recently reported many insurance companies, not just Prudential, are contacting people who may be the beneficiary on a policy. Even so, we remain skeptical due to the fact we did not know of any policy our deceased had with the company. Our deceased kept immaculately well-organized records, so it does not seem possible. And yet, who knows? After reading advice already posted to this site, we called to have claim forms sent to us. They will NOT send out any forms unless we can prove the name on the letter is indeed our deceased member. They say they MUST have the deceased SSN, dob, and dod (there may be other information they MUST have, but they were not clear on that). We decided to verify all of this with our local Prudential agent before proceeding. It may be safer to wait until the policy proceeds have been remitted to the State. The State is easy to deal with.
I got a letter that appeared to be from Prudential Life Insurance Company. This number was listed on the letter. As others, I was suspicious so I went to the website and called an 800- number for insurance claims. The gentleman with whom I spoke transferred my call to the abandoned policies office and gave me the number 855-277-8061. We'll see what happens but at least it's not a scam. Whew!
Letter from this number instead claiming unclaimed insurance due on my deceased father. All I know is you hold on for a long time on this number so something must be going on. I'm sure I would have known if there was another policy on my father. He never kept secrets. I will find out for sure. Said they were Prudential. Yeah yeah.
Received the identical letter with the above listed phone number on April 19, 2013.I spoke with an extremely bright and knowledgeable young woman who was most convincing in her answers to my many questions. Since my husband had died in September, 1984, I thought "wow, they really are reaching pretty far back in their abandoned case review". Am now awaiting the claims paperwork she said will soon follow. A $2000 plus windfall after almost 30 years sounds pretty good to me. I have emailed a local Prudential agent to check on this, but have not heard back yet. I am usually pretty aware of scam calls, but do not believe this one was.
James J. Avery,Jr. is CEO of Prudential Ins. Thank You so much I am getting tons of grief on dormant payable policies from not only Prudential but Commonwealth & Metlife..The claims people keep telling me they cant access the info on old policies. so I am going to report them all with proof @ Dept of Insurance & Commerce, which regulate companies where policies (state where written)I am trying to close out all policies on my,deceased family members. These policies also have demutualization (stocks) payable, due to merging with other Ins. companies, therefore selling stock publicly on NYSE for Ins. capital gain-increasing their revenue/profitabilty.
"Immediate Attention Required"I received a letter from this phone number with the action note shown above. The letter cites an unclaimed death benefit on my deceased mother which will be transferred to the State if the rightful owner cannot be located. "One of their customer service associates is eager to help me." Upon calling this number a message was received as follows: "Due to a recent large mailings of letters regarding unclaimed death proceeds all lines are busy. Hold on the line or call back later."After holding for at least a good half hour there was no further communication.
The state collects 35% of the funds/dividends. The cost of fedEx is also not free. So the Ins. only rolls over dividends & does NOT pay the intrest accrued. althought the state is collecting intrest on all property sent in. These policies are still not closed out. You have to continue to check their site weekly for maiden names, married names, etc. This is a ongoing monoply between Banks, retailers, utilities & Ins. & State Unclaimed Property. So how is this a free service ?
