Thank you, Gary, for your two excellent posts. I'd like to share another tip: When these collection agencies go phishing, and leave a message with a toll free number & a file number, I call them back. Once they confirm the name of the person they think they have on the phone, I give them my phone number ONLY, make sure they have written it to the file, and then, in the strongest possible terms, tell them that the person they've been seeking is not at my number, nor am I related to, or know the person. Finally, I tell them that if I receive any further calls from their company(Active Capital, or however it's spelled), I will be reporting them to the CRTC. I usually don't ever receive another call. Sometimes things work the way they're supposed to, eh? ;-)
This is incorrect. As some noted, they call regardless of whether YOU owe the money or not; they won't accept that they may have the wrong person. They may be looking for someone who formerly lived at the particular address. That is the situation I'm in, but now call me. I've never owed them money and have no unpaid debts.
Please note that aktiv capital buys old debt that CANNOT BE LITIGATED on after two years in Ontario and tries to sucker people into admitting they owe money, which then restarts the two year period---GOTCHA! So never answer, never talk to them, just get call blocking software (iblockerpro works perfect for me on a blackberry. It's a dream, actually!). I am outside the two year period by about five years and am free free free but they keep calling and hoping I'll pay up. This after I paid enough interest for three of the original loans. Such is the slavery of our system.
Yup. They buy old debt that they legally can't sue you to recoup. They can TRY to convince you to pay them... don't. You don't owe them anything. They've been trying to get me to pay some old defaulted debt for nearly 10 years, now. It's so old it's already off my credit report. That's how old it is.They'll use language like "we're filing a law suit" or "we're representing ____Bank" or "we're sending you paperwork that you better take RIGHT to your lawyer" or (my favorite) "if you do not pay within 3 days, we will be forced to escalate this matter to the next level." Nothing here means anything. If you DO talk to them... try to get them to say "we're going to sue you." They can't legally say that because they can't legally sue you. They'll suggest they're working "On behalf of _____ Bank." Tell them "really? Because I called that bank and they say that debt is no longer valid and I don't have to pay it. I got the guy's name... you want it? (they'll say no).OH... and they'll use things like "contact the office of Brian Goldstein" or some other jewish-sounding name. Plays into people's racist notions that "Jewish name, must be a lawyer." There is no lawyer there by that name. That person probably doesn't even exist.String them along if you want, but they won't stop calling you. Block the number and have done with it.
They spell it AKTIV KAPTIAL and not "Active Capital" or "Active Capitol" because they don't want people to easily Google them and find out that by the time they're calling you... you don't owe that money anymore.
The Government of Canada (CRA) did a "reassessment" on my 2013 taxes, and claims I owe them money. I do not.I mailed them the information they requested (proof of the child I claimed, and have been claiming for 17 years, who still lives with me, and is in school, and has no income - birth cert., passport, custody order, S.I.N. #, school confirmation), but they said they didn't receive it (can't trust the post office, you know - Canada Post). Two days ago I resent the information by fax, along with my phone number (big mistake), so they could call and verify receiving the information (which they did), and surprise surprise - now I'm getting calls from a debt collector.Call display. I will never answer, or talk to these people. Still an annoying form of harassment, though.Guilty until proven innocent. Thanks Canada. And yes, I was born here, lived here all my life, been paying taxes since my first job - 35 years ago.A**holes.
