This is legitimate. I received a voicemail from someone saying they are an American Express fraud protection specialist regarding a credit application under my name. Provided a four-digit reference number and said available hours are M-F 9am-7:30pm EST. The person leaving the voicemail had a foreign accent and bad call quality which was suspicious. But I did call the number and a person with no accent and clear call quality answered. She asked for my name and if I was provided a reference number. I provided both my name and the reference number. She let me know they received a credit application under my name and asked if that was correct. I confirmed that was not me who applied. She confirmed they will deny the application, she let me know when they received the application, and provided guidance on protecting myself from fraud such as locking credit reports etc. She also confirmed that they do not currently have a record of any accounts with them under my name, which is correct. I am well aware that someone actually has been applying for credit with my information for the past couple years and have already taken steps to prevent new accounts being opened in my name without my knowledge. I'm confident this is a legitimate caller. There was no attempt to get more information from me besides my name, the reference number I was provided, and whether or not I had actually applied for credit with them.
Caller stated he was from American Express and gave a reference number. As I don't have an American Express account I would consider this a possible phishing attempt.
CAller said he was from American Express and left a reference number. Said he was calling about a request from us. We have made no request of American Express.
I was concerned about the number so I went to the American Express website and looked up customer service (800.492.3344). Turns out that the call was legitimate and there was an issue with someone applying for a credit card under my name
This number is definetly tied to a scam. They called two of my phones and left messages with the phony reference number. I called back and they attempted to get me to verify my info saying someone applied for a business card a few weeks earlier. I had just looked at my credit and seen no inquiries. I told the lady I wouldn’t verify info as I trust no one especially after the equinox breach lol
Pretty crazy the scammers go to boards and try to sell the scam as real. Unbelievable!! Wish I could get my employees to work at something this hard lol
This is now a legitimate AmEx number. I also got messages on both my home and cell numbers leaving a reference number about a "request in your name". Instead of calling this number, I called American Express customer service directly (800-528-4800) and they said that this is a new number for them for new accounts. Turns out that someone had fraudulently tried to open an account in my name via the web.
