This is really Amex. They were calling to verify information for an account I was opening. But I wasn't opening an account. Someone got my ssn and tried to open 7 cc accounts. This number was legit for me.

Another family member got a call from this number and I called it back. The phone answered as if it was American Express and in reference to a new account application. I avoided giving over any personal information, although some information was asked for. I then contacted American Express and they informed me that the 800-450-8738 number DOES NOT BELONG to AMERICAN EXPRESS and THE CALL WAS A SCAM.Anyone here saying otherwise was either duped by the caller or is part of the scam.

I was suspicious but after extensive verification including calls to the main American Express numbers, I’ve learned this number is legitimate.

I'm confident it's a legitimate Amex number since I called back the number and providing the reference number which was for a fraudulent application. I would caution everyone to only make a call back number and not answer the call right off the bat due to the ability for the number being spoofed as mention by other contributors.

I just got a voice message from American Express with a reference number saying that someone tried to open a new account with my name. 800-450-8738 The number directly led to a voice message "Leave your name and I will call you back" ??? SCAM

This number is genuine. I got a voicemail asking for a call back to this number and confirmed it was ok by going to Amex site and using online chat. Checking with the company directly is always best if you are unsure about such an inbound call.

This is a fake number, I just called American Express directly and the representative told me that it was not affiliated with American Express.

Got a call yesteday and today from man claiming to be Aldredge from AMEX in new accounts from phone number (623)492-3944. Stated I needed to call back to (800)450-8738. I called AMEX directly and they checked new accounts dept., fraud dept. and exisiting accounts services but IT IS FRAUD AND NOT A LEGITIMATE CALL FROM AMEX. It is 100% SCAM. Always call the number on the back of your card or get their number directly from their amex web site.
