Most debt collector's are not interested in anything you have to say. I think it is always best to deal with the actual business you owe the debt too. There is never a reason to pay the debt collector it will never go towards your bill and many times it is a scam best thing to always do is not answer or tell them wrong number, but don't waste time arguing with them not worth it
They're not alone many more like them. But there's government agencies working to stop them. We have been the victims of ID theft in so many ways because if the thieves want to ruin your life they know how to. It's not about money it's about control they feel like they're controlling you. Check your credit often, you don't have to request a report everytime, if you start and the credit security questions are not one's you're able to answer then something is wrong. Especially check children and elderly who have little or no credit because those can be used for yrs w/o anyone noticing

This caller claimed to be a rep from Intuit/QuickBooks & we needed to renew our Subscription for $1899.99. After asking a few questions things sounded strange. Asked her for our PIN # & she did not give the correct number.
Call came in. Hello, hello. No response. Disconnected. Suspect possibly WELLS Fargo (WF) , but no actual idea. Don't trust one moment.
