Aware that this number is a scam, I dialled 1 as instructed and said to the man at the other end: do you know that what you are doing is criminal? His reply was: can you give me a [***]?Ample proof that all the people working for that fake credit card company are very well aware that they are criminals.
Just got a call from these scammers, after calls almost every other day the past month. I just let it ring the first ten times they called, but the last couple times I've answered and waited on hold to tell a representative that 1., I don't have a credit card, and 2., to take me off the list. Of course they hang up as soon as I say this, and obviously, since people are being harrassed constantly, they don't bother taking anyone out of their system and just keep on cycling through numbers. This time I called them back, too, and pressed 2 on their menu to supposedly be taken off their call list. I seriously doubt it will work, but here's hoping.
A lot of suggestions about what to do about these calls. Point is nothing works, including suggestions saying the calls will diminish over time. Consider this: my mother died about 4 years ago. Her phone number had its roots from the days when the number only had 3 digits. So it's been in the family a long time. I want to preserve the number for when I retire and have to give us the company cell phone. So I ported the number to one of the very inexpensive cell services. $10/month. The line has not been answered for almost 4 years now. Sometimes I have it on, but mostly it's powered off. Turn it back on and almost immediate begins a parade of calls, often 5-6 a day. So now tell me what works because the answer is nothing works. I never realized how many scam calls my mother was getting daily. She was 94, mostly blind, and with cancer. If I could trace down one of these scammers and had a way to get to them, you can pretty much guess what I would do. Hint, it wouldn't be talking to them or trying to get them arrested. But that is most unlikely as these calls are not traceable, even those that do originate in the USA. Voice over IP and even Uncle Sam cannot find them. Just route the call through a server in Russia, Iran, etc. calls can be traced back that far, then a dead end. One thought is this Do Not Call list. Remember that this is a public list and also confirms active numbers that spammers can easily get. Maybe we need to start removing our numbers from DNC because in a way we are just making ourselves targets for these spammers.
Mary: I don't think blocking or not blocking numbers changes anything. Generally they are not originating one call at a time. For years VoIP has allowed multiple calls to be made at the same time. They answer the call to the first sucker that answers and drop the rest. This is generally the reason nobody is on the other end. Spoofing CID is simple, so these spammers automatically change the ID as a matter of course. The only difference blocking makes is if your phone rings once or six or seven times before the spammer is disconnected. However some of these spammers have a pattern to their spoofing. Some but not all of them generally use only a handful of numbers, or always the same area code and prefix. If they do that, eventually you can block them. Won't stop the calls but at least you won't have to get up to answer the phone. Those who spoof a different area code and prefix every call? Well nothing to do about them but let it ring or manually terminate the call.
They can't sign you up for anything you'd receive through USPS if they don't have your mailing address. I believe I see a big indication that the DMA do-not-mail list is where they're getting this information these days, likely due to the fact that people are on to the DNC list. These days it's evidently not worth the effort for their mole to get the information to them because no one new is signing up for it. I smell a shill.I was a telemarketer for a while in the early 90s, working for a local company and only calling locals (one of my first jobs, when I was too young to know better). We had a quota. We had to sell 5 items a night or lose our job. It was imposed by our supervisor, who got 2 nights' work in one, or wanted to. I say these people have a quota too.I also say they have no feelings about hurting anyone on this end of it, especially if a little fair play is involved in the way of call screenings. I say their general outlook is, if someone on this end is greedy, stupid, or gullible enough to let go of their money (a fool and his money being soon parted) then they are greedy enough to take it.Come to think of it, if they use the USPS for their dirty dealings, we might get some unwanted paper in our boxes but maybe the USPS won't have such trouble paying their bills. As for the unwanted aspect of it, I suggest a diamond cut paper shredder. Office Depot and Wal-Mart sell good ones. There are even things people make with the shreds once they're made. I once had to shred paper for my cat's litter box when she had surgery. That sounds appropriate for such things. Also, if you answer, it's like a Chinese finger puzzle in that they know they have a live line because you answered. That, like the DNC list, or pressing 2,3, or whatever they give you claiming it will opt you out, just makes them want to call more. I learned that from other postings on this site. I suggest physical discomfort: air horns or large bells, right in the receiver, if you must answer at all, or some sort of dead end extension/indefinite hold scenario. At least then you won't waste another moment of your time.
I have been blocking calls since the 2012 election. The only calls that get through are from family or contacts but I still log about three of these kind of calls per day. You would think the scammers would give up by now.A blocked number will ring my phone one time then when I get time I will research thier number.
Just called again. We don't have call blocking in P.E.I. This goes on day after day. I hate call centres and the people who work in them. This one is about a low interest rate loan of 1%.
These malicious actors will call if you answer or if you don't answer. It is a computer generated Rob-oCall. Therefore you might as well turn the tables on them. On one such call I faked the voice of an elderly frail woman. I now had them hooked. Later in the call I changed from " elderly frail woman" persona to that of a load and pissed off grandson. Complaining they are abusing their Grandma. This does two things.1. Wastes their time. The time you waste is less time they spend with a vulnerable, naive, "victim".2. Anger release. Let's face it, these malicious actors piss you off. Take it out on them. They deserve it and YOU WILL FEEL BETTER.I have friends who do the "What are you wearing" bit.*_Don't get mad, get even_*
