I got this letter today stating to call 1-877-222-0011 for information just as the others who have posted before. When you search this number on the Experian site, nothing comes up. Do not call it, please.
My mother got the EXACT letter. The recorded message said to press 1 to order a score report. What a scam!
Got the same letter-Have had credit freeze for several years. Did check my credit report (before checking out this site) ($1 and if not cancelled in 7 days charged a monthly fee) No change on credit report. Called Experian to check it out and they didn't know anything about the letter. That's when I checked this site and saw the letter was a scam. Never thought about checking the site first.
I just received two letters, exactly the same, stating that because I put a freeze on my credit they were required to notify me within 30 days that a creditor reported a name, social security or address change. It looks very real, gives the correct Experian number which only allows for ordering a report or cancelling or putting a freeze on, so what good would that do? So of course you'd have to call the other number because you'd want to know what the letter means, what creditor reported etc. There is zero info through Experian re: 877-222-0011 and I found no way to speak to a live person to verify. Thank God for all of you who reported on this number. This site has saved me more than once from scam calls, but this is the first letter scam. I plan to send copies of both the letter and the envelope it came in to both Experian and the US Postal Fraud division. The pre-printed zip code on the envelope shows it was post marked in Costa Mesa, Ca. Experian has all it's correspondence going to Allen, Tx This one looked so real I almost called that number. I have an online account with Equifax so any changes would show up there for sure, it's the biggest one. Because Experian is harder to contact, scammers know it's a better bet for attempting to get your personal info. It's scary out there and the sophistication is growing. Good Luck everyone!
Thank you for these posts. We received the same letter with the same phone number to call. We did NOT call since we read what you said. Who do we turn this into? Police, Experian??
I rec;d the same letter as above, today. I have a freeze that was temporarily lifted 2 months ago and is now back on. Called the number, but gave no information. Thank you all for your posts.
This is not a scam.On experian site I decided to start dispute process to see what would happen. After answering personal questions was able to get my credit report AT NO COST.I usually have to pay $12 to unfreeze credit to pull report at annualcreditreport.comI see where an address was added with a small typo.I tried to dispute it but they told me I could not do it online. It seems harmless so I will not pursue it further.
I received the same letter. I'm not sure what's going on here. Like earlier reports, you couldn't do anything with the real number for Experian except put a security freeze. When I called the other number they did NOT answer the phone as "Experian" they just said hello and told me that if I left my name and number they would call back. I decided not to do that since it sounded fishy. Then I googled the number, came to this site and found these warnings. I had ordered my annual free credit report just a few days before the date of the letter and there was no suspicious information on that report so this really doesn't look like it is legitimate to me. The letterhead for the letter is in black and white which is also dubious. The Experian logo has red and blue in it and I would expect that their letters would go out on letterhead with color. I will do what the post just previous to this one suggested and initiate a fraud investigation on my file and see what happens. I recommend to proceed with CAUTION.
Continuation of previous post: I checked my credit report and couldn't find ANY address changes from a credit report that was done just one month prior. I think this is probably a scam. If you call the second number, block your ID on the outgoing call by dialing *67 first just to be sure.
