You pick up the phone, listen to what the person (earning a living by doing this, probably to pay for tuition) has to say. You then can choose to participate or not, depending if that person is looking for you or if you're even qualified to participate. When you say "no, sorry, I'm not interested", we then add that info into the system and your number is taken off the calling list for that survey. In case you're wondering, we call multiple times a day because a) the computer tells us to and b) because you didn't answer or we got voicemail before, so the computer chooses a different time at which we can hope to catch you at home. It's not like we can tell the difference between someone being outside of the home and someone sitting watching the phone choosing not to figure out who is calling.
We have calling times from 9am to 9pm SK time all days of the week. So there would be a time to catch your parents and if you said for us to call at, say, 8pm, we would call at 8pm. We aren't idiots, but we also have to work. You'd be surprised how many people ARE at home from 9-5.
Caller wanted me to participate in a survey. I wanted to discuss the recent fiasco at the University of Saskatchewan where a dean was fired after expressing his concerns about a reorganization called TransformUS which caused academics and the public to protest, which resulted in (1) the resignation of the provost who fired the dean and (2) the firing of the president. I told the caller that I may participate in the survey after we had discussed the fiasco which the caller did not want to discuss. We agreed to disagree, and I hung up. The University of Saskatchewan needs to work on fixing their problems and not be bothering people like me with their surveys.
I am a shift worker and if I am at home during the day, I am sleeping. Repeated calls can literally affect people's health and well being, and their safety and that of those they work with if their sleep is repeatedly interrupted. I am also on the Canada "Do Not Call" list. I realize the rules do not apply to research callers like yourself, but basic common courtesy would be to leave a message and give the person the opportunity to call back IF THEY WANT to participate. Now that I know who the number belongs to it will be blocked.
To pen a Jerry Seinfeld line, give me your number and I will call you back when ut is convenient for me. And as for "the computer told me to call you" if it told you to jump off a bridge......
