Received a call from this number (570-831-1296) and the caller ID said Social Security. The said our W-2's and W-3's were damaged in the mail...and could I fax another copy to them. I replied that IF they will just fax me a copy of the damaged form...I would be glad to oblige... Well, what do you know! They never faxed me a copy of the damaged form...Glad I didn't fall for it! Then I found this web site to report this number....

My "bad"...the 1-570-831-1296 is indeed a number from the Social Security....The SSA faxed me a copy of my damaged (in the mail) W-2's and W-3's with a cover letter from the SSA (C&E Unit)...So this number is a legitimate SSA # and not a scam... (If you have any question...you can call the SSA 800 Number to ask questions before giving up any important info..) Sorry for my "knee jerk" reaction...It just took them a very long time to fax back my damaged reports.

4/7/11 I received a call this morning from Debbie at 8:22 am???? To early for office hours. She wanted "more" SS information she said I forgot to fill in. I thold her to send the form back. She hesitated and said she couldn't but would send another type of form???? I immediately thought scam.

got a similar message as well.if it really is the social security office...you would think a google search wouldpull up their legit webpage...as most government offices do post their phone numbers.sounds like a scam to me.

Called at 8:30 pm 570-831-1296 is the SS office in Wilkes-Barre PA and they do work intill midnight.

My phone only rang twice. The caller ID said U S Government. I wanted my answering machine to answer it but since it only rang twice, it didn't. I came here to see if a scam. I have been notified by Social Security before but it was always by mail. I would then call them from the phone number that's in the phone book. NEVER give any info over the phone when someone calls you first.

My caller I'd said it was social security not us government. These phone companies are as crooked as crooks themselves.

LEGIT! Call the number they give the real SS number in a recorded message saying they were contacting you. Got a call about empty answer fields in my application. No other questions asked. I check my pdf copy of my application and YES, I did not fill these questions in properly.

Received call at noon on Saturday - nice "older lady" announced herself as being with Social Security (They are at work on Saturday's?) She wanted "additional information for verification purposes" - including social security numbers. I refused and they politely said they would make a "note" on the call. End call..

I have just received two calls from this number at about 11AM central time. In both cases I answered the call, but no one was on to say anything. I do suspect that this is a scam.
