I got a call from this # with a voicemail directing me to a 1-800 #. Googled it and found that 800 # on multiple SSA websites.
I received a call from someone in Penn. from SS office and he knew what date I a telephone cal scheduled with the real SS office to start my SS. He said he could do the call from there if I wanted to call him. His name was Harry. I did notreturn the call as I am sure it is a scam and will report to the SS office. the number was 570-831-1296
I received a call from 570-831-1296 at 12:58p CST re: a form I had submitted re: assistance with Medicare Plan D. I had provided my husband's SS # & the caller said the info didn't appear to be correct. I had her tell me what I had provided and the number was off by one digit so I gave her the correct SS #. When I hung up, I got nervous about giving out his SS # when we've been told for years to never provide your SS # to anybody over the phone. I called our local Social Security office and they confirmed that the call was legit. My file indicated that I had received a call at 1:58p EST re: a problem with a Medicare Plan D assistance form I had submitted because I had provided the wrong SS # for my husband. The note in my file indicated that I had provided the correct SS # & that my form was being processed. But I won't do that again. It was just too risky for my comfort!
Yes, it turns out the stupid federal gov't. actually contravenes their own guidelines and calls people out of the blue asking for their social security number! I've given them an earful, and written my congressman a letter about their waste of time, resources, and money, and, more importantly, about the way they confuse the people they are supposed to be serving.PS--the call type is known, but the drop-down menu doesn't give the option, "Federal Government."
I've called the SSA 3 times, twice at 1-8---772-1213 and once at 1-800-775-7802--since receiving the call, and all three reps say yes, they make those kinds of calls. When I asked how a person's supposed to know if it's a scammer or Uncle Sam calling, they admitted there could be some confusion.I've written my congressman and even turned in a rpt. to the SSA about themselves for waste and abuse.
I just received a call (10/13/10)from this number stating that there was a problem with my SSN account. It came in after 8 p.m. He was informed that SS doesn't call this late. And, that no info will be provided over the phone. This is clearly a scam and ID theft attempt. Looks like there a problem with any 570 area code.
Received a telephone call from a person identifying herself as "Debbie with SS Office in Pennsylvania" asking for a return call - I deleted this, but someone needs to check into this -
