SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO ASK FOR SS# IF IT'S NOT ON THE FORM WE CAN'T HELP YOU WITH THE FORMS YOU SEND US.
I recieved a message from this number 570-831-1296 stating to be Social Security (the caller ID came up as US Government) asking me to verify my information.. Told them I was NOT the person who they were looking for and hung up..Called it back and it again claimed to be Social Security, this time with a recorded message saying they were trying to get in touch with me and would be calling me again. I immediately called the REAL Social Security Office who told me IT IS INDEED A SCAM trying to get informantion by claiming to set you up with direct deposit. They also told to call the Social Security Fraud Hotline (1-800-269-0271) between 10-4 est and report it to them.DO NOT EVER GIVE OUT ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION TO ANYONE WHO CALLS YOU requesting itSocial Security will ALWAYS contact you by mail if they need something from you.
We absolutely DO ask for your identifying information, including your SSN if we are contacting you about a Social Security matter that requires us to access your records. You always have the right to refuse to give it. You will then be told to visit your nearest office in person for further assistance.
Received a call this morning saying that my form was incomplete. I questioned who they were, he said there was no way to confirm if the call was legitimate. I could call the social security office but it would take two hours to track down "Dan"; the only name he was willing to give. I said I would not give my info and he quickly got off. I call the ss office and the assured me there were no incomplete forms. The number was unfamiliar to them. They always give first and last names, identifiable number, and other specific info to assure that it is indeed from their office. DO NOT GIVE Info!
The data center absolutely calls people to clear up errors on forms or to follow up on applications. They work from 7amEST to 1am EST. They can call customers as late as 9:00 in their own time zone. They will normally make 3 attempts to contact a person. If they are unable to reach them, they will send a letter or forward a report a local social security office. They can also do this if you don't want to give them your identifying information when they call you. It will significantly delay processing of your issue, but the option is available if you don't want to give them your SSN and other information needed to verify that they have reached the correct person. As a reply to the person who earlier said it must be a scam because the National 800# operator couldn't confirm they had been called, I work on the National 800#. We can't always tell if someone from an internal department is trying to reach you. If you have a name and/or phone number, we can verify if they work for SSA, but that's about it. It's good to be cautious about giving out your information, but you can generally tell if we are legit. You know if you've filed any applications or forms with us. If we say we are calling about (whatever), and you did start to conduct that type of business with us, or send in that kind of form, there's a good chance we are trying to help you. If you still don't feel comfortable, ask the caller to send you a letter instead. FYI - the number that started this is legitimate. Debby is a friend of mine. She's worked for Social Security for 15years.
received call from this number at 2:05 p.m. Feb. 7, 2013. do not recognize this number, did not answer the call
YES I GOT THE SAME CALL. I DIDNT GIVE MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. I EMAILED GOVERNOR CUOMO'S OFFICE TO SEE IF THIS IS LEGIT OR NOT.
Got a call from :US Government" at this number tonite.. I wasn't here, but it is on my Caller ID... They DID NOT leave a message. Surely, if it were important they would have said, please call back or something.. nothing!!! I recently had a death in the family, I am listed as next of kin, so..... my phone number is now public I suppose and they may be trying to get me into some illegal scam they may be running? I don't know, but I will call the local SSA office and find out for sure. This is NOT a local number for our state's SSA office.. Ha! Not surprised at all...
This number is from the SSA. They were calling to confirm information on a form that was sent to them. They left a message with an 800 number to the social security office. They said it was ok if a call was not returned that they would mail out the questions they needed answered and for me to return my response.
