I recieved a call yesterday,I was given the # there systems are down for the moment ,and i called back later, and the system is still down.they still told me to call back.If they called once they will call again,,i havent seen a swat team or irs collections van anywhere close ,so for right now Im not concerned.
I just got the same call from an agent called "Miss Turner". She ask that for confirmation I give her my social security and bank information for verification. She gave me athe (800) 829-7650 to call back. Knowing that the IRS will NEVER ask you for this (they already have it - if they were to call you) and will send letters first: I told her that we ran a private investigator firm and to please wait for 45 seconds to do an immediate phone line reverse trace to identify the physical source of the call. She IMMEDIATETLY hang up the phone.I wish this will work as well with those 6-7pm telemarketers of online pharmacies that pester us daily!!!
Got a call and discovered that it correlated with a letter I received from Department of the Treasury Financial Management Service Alabama. It is my belief that this is a collection agency and may, again MAY, be related to the US Dept of Education as my received notice did provide a TIN. They apparently got my number from a database. I have more information on the database. There is reason to believe that the database company is liable and we may be able to collectively file suit if you can prove the relationship with the company. The database service says they only use public records and cannot change anything in their database. The process is is full of flaws and people are getting harassed. They called to my cell.
Message left on voice mail: This is the IRS, you need to call 800-829-3903 and leaves a file number. Within a minute, another call comes under under 546-751-9643. This happens several times a day.
On 10/22/2009 had call from blocked number at 6:30PM. Caller, Mr Egar, said he was IRS, then wanted me to verify my SS# and more info. I refused to verify anything or give any info and told him I have no way of knowing if he really is from IRS. He told me to call back next day between 8AM and 8PM to get a problem straightened out. He did not give me any case # or any other info as to the nature of the "problem".I informed my lawyer and gave him the number. He said IRS does NOT call people without first sending a letter that you must sign for. He is currently checking it out.I do not know at this moment whether it was legit or not. Will report back here when I do know.
This number called my home had the wrong name I usually get calls from debt collectors for this name and call back to have the number taken off their list so i decided to so the same. I work as a fraud claims officer for an airline so let me assure you the rule of thumb is to NEVER give out your own personal info to any company or collection agency even in the event that you are clarifying a mistake this is how toy GET into a scammes system. In this case the automates system said *they* are the IRS and then asked for a SS# to proceed. This is more that suspicious it is leading you down to ID theft. Do NOT give your SS# or your business ID #. The IRS does NOT call from an anonymous number let alone call with an automated message. They have procedures in place. Call the local office during office hours and talk with a rep and give them this info. Or go online and leave then a scam alert email so they may counter this. I bet you money this is a TEST RUN to see how many people they can get closer to tax season scammers will go wider and net more people.BEWARE!!!!
So I got the call also. Claiming to be from the IRS and so on and so forth. They gave me a reference number, a call back number and a time frame to call back. I offered no information, and when I called the IRS back from the number that was listed on the web site, they had no information about the call. However, a few days later I got a notice from the IRS requesting a back dated return, the letter had the same reference number that they gave me on the phone, I called the number and discussed the return. I then asked about the call, she said that the collections dept does make outgoing calls and will ask for a TIN for ID. I guess the bottom line with my experience is that this was the real thing. I would not give any info over the phone to the first call, but make suren that you contact the IRS directly, lets face if they were able to bring down Capone, they can take you down too.
The 800-829-3903 number may really be the IRS because it is listed on several IRS Official Web sites as one of their collection numbers, but the person who initally called and left a message may be calling as a prank getting people to call the IRS in a panic and wait forever to talk to someone to clear it up. I called and they told me that it was strange because unless they sent me a letter first, or unless they gave me a specific agent's number I wouldn't be getting a phone call - especially to what the person on the phone referred to as a main number.
We are constantly getting collection calls for everyone in our family with the same last name, then I got this call, they asked for my husband who wasn't home and told the guy I was his wife and what was it about. He wouldn't tell me, he would only talk to my husband. This would have to be a scam since both of our names appear on the tax return, wouldn't I be privy to discussing the matter? It's probably just another collection agency giving us bogus information. And I just recently filed a complaint with the FTC on a collection agency that kept calling us over one of our son's debts, so they might be retaliating.
They left an automated message on the voicemail. It said to call this number which is an IRS number and it said they would leave a case number but no case number was left. Maybe the scammers are leaving these messages for people to warm them up for the follow up call where they actually get you on the line. They leave the message with the legitemate IRS number and when they call you back you assume that yes it is the IRS they already left me one message. They then proceed to get you to give away your social security number and birthdate and all the info they need for identity theft.
