Never give your personal info over the phone. I've talked to the IRS before they haven't asked me my SS # before. Have them send you a letter to verify....don't fall into identity thelf.
well first off i got a private call at around 8:04 in the morning. i answer and said hello and no one answered. i then got another private call number at 8:40 am. This time it was a woman claiming to be from the automated something from the irs. she asked me if i knew i had a federal tax return issue and i said yes. she wanted me to give her my social and i said no. she then asked if she gave me my last four would i give her my first five. i was like no. i figured they should already have it and i said to her that i'm not giving it over the phone. she gave me a case number but i felt that if they wanted me the should write me like they always do. furthermore it was before 9am.. i felt like it was a scam.. i bing ed the number and now i'm reading all of this stuff here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I received a call from a "Mrs. McMahan" purporting to be from the IRS asking me to give her my SSN for identification purposes. I have exchanged correspondence with the IRS and she said she was calling about this and described the correspondence. I did not give her my SSN and am now on hold with the IRS to report the incident. I suspect (strongly) that this was not a legitimate call. I also wonder how she would have any information about me. That makes me wonder about security with the IRS.
I wish I could answer every one of these comments--clearly a lot of confusion and that's what the scammers want. It's even possible they are posting on sites such as this one to further confuse matters. The KEY is that they WANT you to look up the number on the IRS site or a site like this and see it is legit. Then when they call you back you think you're really talking to the IRS and so you are now willing to give them the information. But they aren't really calling from the IRS. If YOU Call the IRS what have they lost? Nothing--one out of thousands of people they're trying to scam. Even if you think those of us saying this is a scam don't belive it--fine! But that doesn't change the fact that when someone calls you you do NOT know if they are legit ... and you should never, ever, ever give our your social security number or other personal identifyers over the phone!
Just because they leave a legit numbher on your answering maching does NOT mean they actually called form that number. This is 100% a scam. NEVER give your soc sec number out over the phone unless you initiated the call! Even then, usually the last four digits are sufficient for identification.
Please let me know what happened after you pursued thisphone call. Other websites list the number as a suspiciousone. Others, can't tell but look genuine. I guess best thingto do is call IRS directly. In your phone call, were you given a case number as they didme? Why call on a Saturday? besides, normally IRS will send you information by mail. Thanks,
I got a call at 5:30 pm (after business hours)on my business line telling me that it was the IRS-- either there was a balance due or some other issue.I started to give him a cell number to call and he said it was a computer generated call and he wouldn't be able to call another number. He asked me for the last digits of our tax ID number. (Wouldn't the IRS have that?) I didn't give it to him.He said his name was Jim McCauley and gave me his ID number and a case number, and said for us to call this number back by Friday.
I got an email that looked like it came from the IRS stating that they had calulated my taxes and I had a refund due. When I clicked the button on the page it took me to a pop up in which if I gave them my credit card info they would immediatly apply the refund. This looks very official with links to the real IRS site. I figured the whole thing was a scam and closed it all. My computer shortly after developed several trojan viruses and then my phone rang with a message from the IRS to call that number. It was like that movie the ring...I think the whole thing is a pretty sophisticated scam. Be careful and do not give out any info online or on the phone.
