(But the CPA's advice above is accurate: caller ID can be faked, so the ONLY ONLY ONLY time you might provide your SSN [if you don't have a 'reference number'] is if *you* are the one initiating the call.)
This is a legitimate, though poorly designed computer system used by the IRS to try to locate and collect money owed. I have been called twice (once on cell and once at home) and I owed no taxes. The system apparently is not good at matching phone numbers to accounts so it is knowingly calling innocent tax payers and causing concern. I was on hold 70 minutes in total before finally getting a person who could pull up the record and confirm it was for a person that was not me. I would ignore them unless you owe taxes.
800 829 3903 is a legitimate Internal Revenue Service phone #. I had to call this # based on a letter I received from them with regard to a prior tax year. I was on hold for 15 minutes, but an agent did answer and it is clearly the real thing. Anyone telling you it is a scam is mistaken.
I can't say 100% if it's a scam, but this is what happened:I received a call indicating it was very important I call the IRS back by end of business regarding a tax levy. This seems odd as it is August and I paid my taxes in April (I am a CPA and use another independent CPA to do my taxes each year). Also, I know the IRS usually contacts taxpayers by US mail. When I called the number, I was immediately asked for my social security number. When I did not input it, I was transferred to an operator, who then transferred me to another person. Supposedly, they had the "wrong number" as they were looking for a "Mr. Beauchamp" that owned "AXA Management." The entire call was just weird... the second operator asked for my social security number to "compare it to their records" a couple of times, then wanted my address, my name and my date of birth. If it really were the IRS and it was a legit wrong number, there is no reason they would have asked for any of this information. Like I said, I am not sure who this is really, but beware of what info you give out.... this just seems really fishy.
The IRS would never give you a one-day deadline to return a call. They are required to give you sufficent notice to resolve any tax matter, adn would have already sent you a letter weeks before calling you. The idea of the scam is not for you to call back, but to catch you when you answer the phone. Leaving a legitimate phone number only builds your confidence, i.e. something you can verify. However, when you call the IRS you will get nowhere with the case number. But you will get a phone call at another time from the scammer and may reveal information, now that you think the matter is legitimate.
YES BUT THEY FIRST TRY TO GET YOUR NAME AND SOCIAL WOULDN'T YOU THINK IT WAS LEGIT CALL THAT THEY WOULD ASK FOR TAX ID NUMBER NOT YOUR SOCIAL ....!!!!! THINK ABOUT IT THERE IS PEOPLE OUT THERE TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OLDER CITIZENS IT TIME TO GET THE WORD OUT BEWARE
That number goes to Automated Collection Services. VERY questionable tactics. I am not in collection with anyone. Particularly not the IRS !!
We have been getting tel . calls from an unknown, unidentified number. Today the message was left to call this number by the end of business day, with a ref. number. They called twice back to back with the same automated information left on our machine. After reading this information online about this number possibly being a scam and them wanting to know our tad ID's, we never did call back this number.
