Subject was calling regarding a tax problem and needed to discuss the issue tonight. I started to give information -- accidently gave my SSN # -- they are really good at what they do. Then he asked me for my birth date and that's when I knew something was wrong.... his accent was quite strong and foreign sounding. I hesitated in giving him my date of birth and he said he would hang up if i didn't answer him within 10 seconds.... then I knew for sure, it was a scam -- possibly the from another country. I then called the FBI and they told me to send in all the information I had on them directly to their field officeIT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ANY ONE RECEIVING A CALL FROM THIS NUMBER -- REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY TO THE FBI OR IRS and give as many details as possible. (caller ID shows "out of area"
We received a recorded message with the 800 number and a case number and to call back during business hours. This was on Saturday so we couldn't call til Monday. I just hung up from talking with them. It is the IRS and the number is legitimate. Fortunately for us though, it was for the man whose house we just bought.....and not for us. What I don't get is how they got our phone number associated with this property and his name. He is deceased, which I told them and they said they would note it on their records and sorry for the inconvenience. Problem solved.
they called and said they were the irs, said to punch in you rsocial secutiryt number...of course the irs does not ask that..this must be a scam, want it blocked
The IRS will NEVER NEVER NEVER call you out of the blue and request information.....they already have your social security and date of birth. The ONLY ONLY ONLY time you give them your social security number is when YOU have initiated the call for what ever reason and they need to look up your account. I have been a CPA for over 10 years and have NEVER had the IRS call like this. THIS IS A SCAM...SCAM....SCAM....SCAM.....SCAM...SCAM...SCAM..... If you get a letter from them, there will be a reference number on it. They can look up your account with the reference number.....
I received a call from this number as well and it turned out to be very ligit. They left a case # and I called back on my landline and they asked what company I was calling about. I told them the case number and they told me what they were calling about - a company I had sold 9 years ago and now they went under and owed taxes. I told them I sold the company 9 years ago and they told me to disregard the call. They did not ask any personal info and already had my information.
I just received a call on my cell phone from 800-829-3903. She gave me her name and case #. I told her my husband who is a CPA handles all our tax information and she said he could call the number by tomorrow. She didn't even know my last name and I have never put my cell on any tax papers. Called my husband and he said it was a SCAM. The IRS will never call you for information they send requests in the mail!
Well, I can't tell by your postings if this is legit or not to be honest. I heard somewhere that the IRS Will NOT call you on the phone asking for info.
It is the IRS. It is legitimate. I owed back taxes. I didn't respond to the levy notices. In my case the call from this number was a last-ditch "Hey, we're about to levy your bank account" call that I appreciated.
just rec'd the exact same message as indicated above. the number is a real number and it does reach the IRS. the IRS, however, had no record of having called us and their were no problems with our account. seems like many of you might be right that the call itself is a scam, but the number is legit. i will now be on the lookout for the "follow up" call. i even wondered if i was really talking to the IRS, but after they asked several questions about me, i asked them to tell me more about me, like where i worked, etc., and they were able to do so.
