Received call this afternoon, didn't pick up, no message left. Very suspicious in that there was no caller id nor message left. SIN should NEVER be given out on the phone to someone unknown. Revenue Canada won't ask for SIN like that, will they?
This phony CRA # has been calling my husband at least 2x per day asking him to verify MY SIN number....red flag. We own a business and any dealing with the real CRA have always been via mail or to me directly. They are a huge scam using a spoof or redirect number that directs back to a U.S call centre.
This is definitely not Revenue Canada as all Cdn government departments will register as Govt of Canada on the caller id or the government department they are calling from. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR S.I.N. as they are calling you and should already know your information, which proves this is a scam to obtain your id. I have friends and family who work for Rev Canada and they do not randomly call people and ask for your personal information. Also, any government agency should not come up as UNKNOWN NAME on your call display.DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!!
800-931-1026, says they're calling from GOC-GDC. I called the 1-800 - O-Canada number, she directed me to the Service Canada Business line. He stated, clear as day, IF this is a legit CRA agent, they are immediately to provide their name and ID number. If they do not do this, ask for it...if they don't know it...hang up. Check CRA's website - if you owe them money, they will send you notices in writing.
That's not true. I work for the federal government and our office numbers show as GOC-GDC in call display -- not Govt of Canada and not the name of the department.
goc-gdc 800-931-1026at least 30 calls from them in the last 3 months- i ignore it. I just got off the phone with revenue Canada - they would NEVER call more than a few times, and would mail out. They also would NEVER request all of that personal info on the phone...Report your cases to phone busters anti - fraud line Ph# 888-495-8501their website : www.phonebusters.com
Confirmed Fake. I called CRA directly (CRA number is posted on CRA website). I was amazed at how polished these scammers are. CRA will always send you a letter.
Yes, it is Canada Revenue Agency. However, I have serious issues with the way they do business. I highly recommend ignoring these calls wait for the letter in the mail. Rest assured... if they are calling you at home and requesting you to contact them through this number, it is not about anything good. They probably think you owe them money. A government agency should know better than to ask for social insurance numbers over the phone. And when I called at approximately 8:30 p.m. (after a brief message about having my SIN ready), the call was answered by a live person on the first ring. Now tell me... what federal government department answers calls on the first ring at 8:30 at night? Would Passport Canada, Canada Post, Elections Canada, Canada Pension Plan, or any other department answer my call in person at 8:30 p.m. if I needed a service? Nope. Funny how "customer centered" the gov't of Canada can be when there's something in it for them. Knowing that I did, in fact, owe back taxes, against my better judgment I provided my SIN, only to be treated very unprofessionally. The woman was very pushy and acted more like a loan shark than a government employee, which leads me to suspect that these jobs are actually contracted out to collection agents outside the government authorized to act on CRA's behalf. She began by informing me how much money I owed. I told her I was aware of the fact, but that I had just filed a tax return, and the refund would more than cover the amount I owed, and that this would cancel out my debt. She completely ignored this, and proceeded to insist that we arrange a payment schedule. I repeated what I had just said. There was no need for a payment schedule, as my impending refund would cover my debt in a matter of days or weeks (I had already filed my return at this point). She got annoyed and said, "Listen, Mr. C., it's my job to arrange payment of these back taxes. Your latest return is between you and CRA." Hmmmmm... I thought SHE worked for CRA. Interesting, I thought. But wouldn't CRA simply take my refund, deduct what I owed, and send me a cheque for the rest? "Yes," she grudginly agreed, they would, "Now let's see about these payment arrangements." I interrupted her again, and I could hear her sigh loudly at the other end. What purpose would it serve to make payment arrangements on a debt that would non-existent long before the first payment was due? "I'm just doing my job, sir," she replied. "If your refund covers the balance, then you just won't have to make any further payments. That's all." Then what was the point in making payment arrangements? It was a waste of her time and mine. She then became very pushy and *informed* me how this would work. She split the amount into two equal payments and made one due the end of the next month, and the second the end of the month after that. So much for us arranging this together. Then things turned really nasty. She said, "And what bank will you be using to make payment?" "Pardon me?" I asked. "Where do you bank, sir?" she asked, in a rather hectoring, unprofessional tone of voice. "I'd prefer not to say," I responded. She said, "Well, I need this information to make these payment arrangement. Now please tell me where you bank. I need the name of the bank and the local branch." "Why do you need to know this?" I asked. "Because it's my job, sir," was her response. It was clear to me that they were trying to bully me into giving them my banking information to make it easier to go after the money if I didn't make payment as arranged. And to top it off, she wouldn't admit this was what she was doing. She got really ugly about it when I downright refused to give her any banking information. As expected, my refund came through (minues the back taxes I owed) two weeks later, so the whole conversation was pointless, just as I had told her. Bottom line... don't respond to these phone calls. They are made by unprofessional, pushy people, who are not interested one jot in your interests. If you owe them money, they can be professional about it and send you a letter.
I have been getting calls too....when I called back it says have your soc # ready..what the heck is this..I have had calls from Taxman and they always leave a lenghty message and call back number and come down to there office and so on..this is highly suspicious...some days it calls 5 times a day...not very prof in my opinion.
