Sorry to burst your bubble but even first nation people ancestors were at one time 'immigrants'. Their ancestors came over the 'land bridge' that happens(happened) between Russia and Alaska and it's been a proven fact that other people had been here long before the first nation people. Don't get me wrong now, I've no problem with any nationality, race, etc... just those few individuals that ruin things for everyone else, i.e.: the scammers, hackers, terrorist, etc...If you are born in said country then you are of that nationality. If you move from another country to another country to make a new life... then you are an immigrant but you'd say your ancestry is for example: British or Iranian. I was born in Canada so Canada is my native home but some of my ancestors came from Europe but I am not European, some of my ancestors were but not me...I AM CANADIAN. :)And as to the post? Well, the CRA always sends a letter out telling/showing you why/what the problems are with your returns. They'll ONLY call you if YOU request them to call you back. Generally they handle things during the call that you made so no call back is needed. I say this from experience.
I received this call on my company cell phone, I did not answer it in time but when I called it back it stated it was Revenue Canada and to have my SIN number ready. The puzzling thing is my cell phone number is not in my name but through my work. And to top that off I work for the Government of Ontario. So go figure that one. I would be cautious of giving out any personal information.
Probably true @ rubbish. If anyone reads this just know that if you call the CRA (phone number is in your phone book or on your last return/assessment) then stay calm and ask what it's all about and if it comes to pass that you do legitimately owe money then they will work with you to pay it off. They're not going to take every last cent you have right then and there. Just remember that they should send you a letter FIRST and not call you first. Whether it's from the CRA directly or any collection agency (including agencies trying to collect on other debts) they should send you a letter first and foremost and if they do call you without the letter first then you just tell them that a letter outlining what is what is to be sent to you before you'll do anything.Don't let scammers take your life savings, YOU earned it, THEY didn't!
Also, may I add, that a person should ask the caller what address was on a tax return of about 5-7yrs ago. I was asked this many years back when I had to call the CRA about a concern I had. To verify it was me and I was old enough to be calling (I sounded way younger than I was back then lol) I gave them the address and found out it wasn't anything to be concerned about. They had sent me a type of courtesy letter to let me know what was going on about a return. Anyways, the point is, that the CRA should be able to answer YOUR questions to prove they are the real CRA and as far as I know (from what I've been told) the IRS works basically the same way. They should have back info on you that only they should know. Keep your returns somewhere handy so that you can use them as reference and if the caller can't answer then... hello!... probably a scammer.
No the CRA is not a fraud but some people claiming to be from the CRA are frauds, know the difference and keep your money and peace of mind.
I got a similar call several years ago from someone claiming to be from Revenue Canada and wanting to verify my SIN and birthdate over the phone.I don't remember them ever having to do so over the phone. When I said that I would be happy to come down to the local revenue office to provide my particulars and discuss any tax issues, they were adamant they could confirm over the phone.I simply said "no thanks, I'll just come in" and hung up. When I returned the call, it was not answered. A subsequent number search (not an 800 #) turned up an apartment # on Haro St. in Vancouver, BC. Surrey Taxation would handle British Columbia, and last time I checked they don't call people on the phone and ask them for personal information.
I've replied to some of these posts and now I'll just add my own individual post... if you receive this type of call and aren't sure if it's real or not then just hang up and check either your phone book or last return/assessment that was mailed to you for a number to the nearest CRA office. Tell them about the call and that you are calling just to verify your file is fine and up-to-date for your own peace of mind. And if you're of the mind to... then tell these scammers that they owe YOU money and they'd better settle up. Tell them you got a phone call/letter earlier saying that the government owes you and listen as they try to say otherwise. Please record this convo and put it up online... remember these scammers will try their damnedest to bleed your money dry, now it's your turn. Record and youtube it :)
This number has shown up on my call display 3 times so far. I don't answer 1-800 calls because they are usually solicitors, but then I've been looking them up online to see if there's a way to put myself onto their do not call list. I have a gst account, but when they call, they leave a message, so I would seriously question them calling me so many times without leaving a message. I would also question someone asking for my SIN or any other personal information. I am curious if this is connected somehow to fraudulent bank card activity, as I deal with Royal Bank and recently had to get a new card as the Fraud department had reported my card for being used at a store where fradulent activity had taken place (I have no idea where it was, they won't release that information, but for my protection, I couldn't use my card). Thanks for the posts and useful information. I will post again if I actually talk to someone and find out anything!
The 1-800-931-1026 has called our house 17 times since July 30th. They are asking for my husband to return the call. I asked them what it's pertaining to but they of course won't tell me. I asked what type of info he'll need to supply them when he called and they say DOB & SIN. I told them it's not going to happen and if there's an issue to send it in writing. This is now harassment.
