I received mail saying that if I didn't return the included form or call in they would close my accounts. I do have a credit card with them so I tried calling the number on the back but the computerized system couldn't verify me using the last four digits of my SSN and I was transferred to a verification department. The on-hold message there told me that it would be a long wait. I hung up and tried calling the number on the mail. They asked my name, which I gave and then tried for the last four of my SSN, which I didn't give. I *think* that this is really BOA but it seems like they had a major screw up and lost all of my info. Based on that, if this really is real, I don't feel like I should be banking with them anyway because of terrible computer work going on at their company. Time will tell if my card really will be canceled.
I am wondering if there are two things going on. BOA attempting to verify older person's accounts and see if they are susceptible to fishing. Also, possibly scammers are utilizing the same methods. Always call the number on you credit card or statements. Do Not call the number supplied in a letter.
Received a mailer that is made to look like Bank of America and has this phone # on it. It arrived the same day as a scam phone call. This is really extreme. Asks for source of income and full birth date. Threatens to close accounts and drill safe deposit boxes. Also requests filling out a W-9 and W-8BEN form which would give them SS#, Taxpayer ID, etc.It does not reference any account and I have no bank account at B of A. Total scam.
I should have proofread before submitting. This was a letter on Bank of America letterhead and I have a credit card with them.
Got one of these scam letters -- addressed to my father in law who has been deceased for 23 years & never lived at our address. Total bs/scam
I got a letter from Bank of America yesterday. This number is listed on the letter as their customer service number and has the same language that others reported (opening safe deposit boxes by drilling the lock if they don't get the requested info by March 21st). I only have an HSA account with BofA. Logged onto my account and this information is not required for my profile. Called the number on the back of my HSA card. The gentleman said that this letter did not sound familiar and that this information is not requierd for my HSA account. I told him that I could scan the document and email it to them. He said to email it to abuse@bankofamerica.com. If anyone else gets this letter, scan the letter, the reply envelope and the envelope that the letter came in and send to above email address. I also went on the US Postal Service site and reported it as mail fraud.
This might be valid. I called this number on the letter I received. The woman said BOA does audits of their accounts, and they'll contact the account owner if they find missing info. She said to call BOA directly and ask for the Compliance Department if I wanted to verify what she was saying. Otherwise, she recommended I go into my local branch to give them the info they are requesting. I've been trying to reach the general BOA #, but their phones appear to be down.
