I always, if they catch me, ask if it is mandatory. it almost never is, though some census stuff is. if they say no, i say bye. if they say yes, i tell them they will have to mail it to me so i can review.
They called me numerous times, I finally called back just to stop the calls. They kept says US Census Bureau very official. They did not want to mail me anything, only phone call. I told them that I do not disclose info on the phone, as I don't really know who they are and anyaone could say US Census Bureau. They asked me the following questions:1) My health and hospital coverage2) Self insured?3) Locations of my business4) Number of employees5) How many part time and full time employes6) Age of emloyes7) Gender of employes8) Earnings of employees9) Benefits of employes10) Union employes or not?11) Retirement plan12) Tax flex plans?13) Cafetaria flex plan?14) Years in business? There could have been more, but I was typing as fast as I could. They were only able to verify my name, address, city, state, zip and phone. Heck they could have pulled that from the phone book. You could hear a large amount of phone callers in the background. Did not sound real for the following reason.1) Not a census year2) The caller ID did not match the phone number to call back3) They did not offer any mail service. In todays world, nobody gives private info over the phone.4) Supervisor was not available5) Neither phone numbers could be verified to belong to the US Census.
Did anyone call the real US Census Bureau and ask? I got the same call it seems as everyone else, where they gave me this number: 866-564-5432 and also a case number. I called the US Census Demographic Call Center: 1-866-758-1060 (toll free) and asked to verify that it was them. They verified that they are doing a survey about employee insurance and that the call was not a scam. If you get a similar call, I suggest you call the real Census Bureau and check.
The Census Bureau is always doing surveys and statistics, all year round. Not all calls are in reference to taking the census. (every 10 years)The Regional Offices function on a full time basis.
I called the US Census (1-800-923-8282) and they verified that 866-564-5432 is working on 2010 Census. however, there are many numbers that are scams so it is import to verify numbers.
I received the call on my voice mail along with the associated case number. I called and they did indeed have the correct address and business name. When I asked if response was mandatory, the girl said no and offered to mail the forms to me and asked for my mailing address. I suggested that since the US was currently facing a budget crisis that she save the postage because the information not be returned. I also suggested nicely but firmly that the Census Bureau stick counting people since that's what they are authorized to do.
I received a call from this number and did not answer it. They did leave a message and it turned out to be GameStop reminding us we had an unused game credit. One of my kids had put down a deposit for a game and never picked it up. It turned out to be a legit call.
I see that the post didn't show the number that called me. It was (866) 564-5530. It was Game Stop.
