"Linda" left a message on my answer machine yesterday. I returned the call, was asked to "verify" that I was the correct person who had an account. Don't fall for this; it's a scam!
I just received a VM from this number this morning. I had a $0.00 balance on my Cap One card until yesterday. I charged a small amount so I know there is no issue with my card. SCAM!
This isn't a scam -- You're behind on your payments (despite those of you who say you're not). This is definitely Capital One calling to remind you and/or to obtain a payment. The lady calling really IS named Linda, but it's a blanket recording which is on an autodialer which calls Capital One customers who missed a payment or are behind on payments.Paranoia sure strikes deep around here doesn't it?
This is not a scam. After I got the call, I checked my account online and found that I had missed a payment because I never got the bill. I called the number and took care of it. It was Capital One.
Wrong. I am not behind on any payments and got the same call today from the same number. Wanted creditcard number and ss #. I of course didnt give it out.Paranoia my [***].
Hmmm.I received the same message from "Linda" as mentioned by others...twice.I dialed it back after receiving the second one today, hitting *67 firstly {making myself CALLER UNKNOWN}A young man by the name of Thomas answered. I asked for Linda. He explained that Linda was their automated voice mail, but said that he could help me. I inquired further, "What would this department possibly be calling about?""It's usually either due to a fraud alert, or because a payment is past due on a Capital One card. Do you own a capital one card?" {FLAG 1}"You know, I don't know that I do...{now I want to see how this is 'possibly' played}...Oh wait, I think I may have ONE Capital One card. With these banks buying on another out...What do you need to look it up?"Thomas asked for the last 4 digits of my credit card number. {FLAG 2...at least for me}."Not happening. You see, I don't know that I'm REALLY dialing Capital One."Thomas nextly suggested I provide he with the phone number in which Linda had left the message on.This...I decided to provide he with. 216-xxx-xxxx.Hmmm, Thomas was having a tough time finding me....{FLAG 3...at least for me}.Then Thomas asked for the last 4 digits of my social security number AND mother's maiden name {FLAGS 4 & 5...at least for me}."No, that's not happening either Thomas. I still don't know that I'm dialing Capital One."In an attempt to make me feel more at ease, I suppose {?}, Thomas asked if I were by chance sitting near a computer where I could enter www.capitalone.com & go to it. "Yes, yes I am." {In fact...I had been pulling up the 1-866-953-7906 number as we were talking & not liking what I was thus far seeing}..."OK, I'm there now". However...Thomas would come to switch the subject {FLAG 6!}...only stating that he understood & let's just wait & see if I get another call. {?}.Afterward hanging up, I reviewed the capitalone.com website. NO!...The 1-866-953-7906 is NOT under CONTACTS for neither personal &/or business {although there are over 20 TF numbers; including a few for fraud}. FLAG 7!I, secondly, called the number of the back of my BLANK credit card. Ashley answered {I could hear a lot of telemarketing/customer service going on in the background}. Per her request, I provided her with the last 4 of my card number {& answered 2 security questions}. After a few moments, Ashley said it 'did' appear that there was a call made to me in reference to my account today {but didn't mention a previous call or why}. Then Ashley offered to transfer me 'to Security'..."One moment Ashley...Before you transfer me, may I also have your Operator ID#? Ashley complied. I wrote it down 'repeating it' to her....Ashley would place me on hold, but the 'busy CS' noise would come back in, & out, periodically. This went on for approximately 3 - 5 minutes. Lastly Ashley returned to tell me that she was mistaken, that there was 'not' anything wrong with my account. {?}I, thirdly, logged onto my account online. My last payment has been received in a timely fashion {just as it ALWAYS is}...NO unfamiliar new charges...AND..."There are no messages in Your Message Center" when I checked it too.In fact how do we even know that when these credit card 'switched' company ownerships, that 'someone, somewhere' hasn't keep a copy of the database. Regardless, as far as I can ascertain from my own personal experience, it sounds as if they are 'information hunting'/Phishing. Therefore my advice is to 'steer clear' of this number. Do NOT EVER give anyone ANY information unless 'you' are the one calling in on a number on the back of your credit card, or the numbers as listed on a 'secured banking website'.
I just got the same call this morning. I'm on a three month "hardship deferrment" with a month to go and they're already harassing me. I spent over an hour talking to two goons there, only to have a THIRD one call from a call center, probably in India trying to collect. I'm filing complaints and will try to take them to task legally. They are thieves.
It's fraud just happened to me thank god I caught it. ALL WAYS CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE CARD NOT THE ONE THEY LEAVE ON YOUR MACHINE
Yes, paranoia DOES strike deep because they are NOT allowed to make collection calls if you're not behind on your debt. From the looks of these posts, we're all being treated the same way. This is one bank I hope goes belly up.
DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION!! THIS IS A SCAM!!! Just got off the phone with Capital One and they assured me this number is not connected to them at all. Although it sounds pretty real with the " Thank you for calling Capital One" and "This call may be recorded," this is a scam to get your information. If you ever call a credit card company they should never ask you your full social security number or your full card number. They should already have it. The people at the 866-953-7906 number get pretty irritated when you tell them that too. If you have any questions about your account call the number listed on the Capital One website.
