07/30/08 2:09 edt I got a call from this number on my caller ID. Name on ID. is John H. Farrell. When I picked up on second ring they hung up.
I'm quoting a posting on the site whocalled.us:"This is a scam. The American Association of Police Officers [organization listed on the policeusa.com site] is not recognized by any law enforcement personnel. The Illinois Attorney General is trying to get an injunction against them to bar any solicitations for contributions from Illinois. Apparently they keep 90% of contributions for themselves. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY."
I received a phone call today from a man claiming to be with the Police Protection Fund. He wanted a donation for families of officers killed in the line of duty. He said they would mail out a packet for the amount of the donation I agreed too. He was very nice but pushy as well. I finally said I could probably donate $20.00. He thanked me and we ended the call.I then went to the internet to research the police protection fund and could not find it anywhere. I put in their telephone number and found this site. In the meantime they called back to get my correct address. I told the woman on the phone that I thought they were a scam and I would not be sending in any money. I also told her to take my number of her call list. We will see what happens.
Caller asked if mr&mrs xxx homeSaid Yesthey hung up.Did *69 and got this number. Thanks for this board for documenting these persistent, pesky, rude, irrating calls.See previous posts--same m.o, voice, demenor, and righecousness about the FOB.
When you revieve a call from the Police Protection Fund = 301-762-6650, you should be glad you were called. A representative will be kind, courteous, caring and above all a [***] artist. Asking for a donation to this "fund" is just another way to say, hey, we need more of the money you don't have to spare. The real [***] are the phone companies whio sell your phone number to marketing companies, even you non pub people have your address and number sold, without the name. Ever wonder why you start getting all sorts of junk mail and solicitation calls just after you get your new phone number? Well, that's the answer. Screw em all.
It looks like they're ramping up for the sympathy season. They called here today. I don't have anything nice to say about them. Same name, same number, same methods.
I pay to have a telephone due to necessity, I should be able to expect a lack of invasion. I find it troubling that despite requests to stop calling, this and most other solicitors can't/won't/don't. Furthermore, there is really no way to stop them. The Do Not Call law has no teeth that can really be enforced and the idea that anyone calling themselves a charity can ignore the rule sucks. There's no such thing as opt-in, opt-out, it's just the fact that they (and you) seem to think it is ok to interrupt my non-working peace and quiet. Additionally, now I get to pay for a cell phone that they're allowed to call at their leisure, again with no opt-in, opt-out or DNC list.As someone in the know, who doesn't work for Duncan, I can assure you that 1) police/fire deaths are well compensated for 2) these charities are sucking a huge percentage off the top and 3) YOU are paying so they can rip you off on top of it all.
