This number is from Google's pool of numbers. As several here have said its used for the 2 factor authentication that you can sign up for (your choice to or not) your google account such as GMail.Additionally, its also used for other services such as Google Talk, which allows you to make phone calls via VoIP using your computer microphone and speakers. In alot of cases, these are free phone calls.So as with everything else, use common sense when determining which phone calls you answer.
Got a call from this # at 3am last night! Of course, I'm not awake enough to see the caller ID; I just answered before it woke the kids. Some Voice Message about a code, blah blah blah..... I was soooo angry because I have a brother in the hospital in serious condition and my heart was racing answering the phone. I was awake the rest of the night/morning - Shame on this company!

This is one of the verification numbers GoogleMail sends if you login to your Gmail account from a different computer or have deleted the cookies from your browser. It is not an automatic thing; you have to sign up for 2-step verification from inside your Gmail program. It happens on login, you pick up the automated call, punch in the SIX numbers and then your mail loads.HOWEVER...I have also received calls (unanswered, of course) from someone in Kentucky. Since I don't answer such calls, I have no idea what they wanted. I'd say either Google is getting these numbers from some phone bank or someone has hacked Google (again).
