It's not a scam. If you ever applied for financial aid or signed onto any website that had information for school regarding grants, loans, or scholarships, this is why you are getting a call from this number. I just told them I wasn't interested and to stop calling, they did.
The new scam as of today:American Shopping CentersAlso acting under 515-369-5831, (another autodialer) testing to see when you will pick up the phone, and then someone will call you from 000-000-0000 and tell you you have won something.Their toll free number is supposedly 866-682-7658.
Do not call, I am on the do not call list
Sorry, I shouldn't say it isn't a scam. I wouldn't give them my info if my life depended on it. Any real grant source wouldn't ask for bank info or personal information. I'm guessing it's from www.careersandcolleges.com. I started getting these phone calls two days after I signed up for grant info.
Called saying I won a trip, and a gas card for 100 dollars, and all I have 2 do is pay a one time fee of 2.95 for shipping and handling, then I told them I don't have a card, then asked for my home number my cuz number, everything, then I said I'm at work he said I will call back, n plz do not put phone straight 2 answer machind...n it wass a accent I didn't understand...who are these people
called saying something wrong with my computer so i told them you not about to hack into my sh*t goodbye...
1.) They are NOT that number, they mask their caller ID, most likely they are from some other country. Do not go lynch some poor New Yorker! The bad news: not much really you can do about them through normal channels other than bomb their country. (Where's Bush when you need him...!)2.) A LOT of your information might be flying around on the web, that's how they got your name, address, etc. but it is highly unlikely that they have your CC # even if they say they do. They would charge you without calling. Plus with most cards you are protected against fraud like that and could deny such charges easily. 3.) Might as well have fun with them! They get really mad and scream in chinese when you play along for a while, misunderstand everything they say, ask them to repeat themselves constantly and offer them to share that free vacation with you in return for paying for $2.95 s&h or make other weird proposal...4.) Never EVER give them any real information other than what they already have. Feel free to give them all kinds of very creative information like your work number or address (that happens to coincide with the # for your least favorite Congress man, the local Secret Service or FBI office from the gov. pages in your phone book...)
I received first and one call today. They identified themselves as GBM Technet and an affiliate to microsoft. They claimed my computer was downloading viruses and needed me to log onto their server / website. I wouldn't do that because if it was a valid call, it would have come from my ISP or internet provider. If one were to do as they say, they could gain access to information on your computer... i.e. identification theft!! It's a scam!
I'm getting two or three calls a week and they don't stop despite several requests to be removed from their call list.
Numerous calls a few months ago. Now they have started again. Two on a Friday evening, one 8:30am on Saturday morning.
