I had a call from Microsoft windows service centre but in fact they were “Support on click”.01274 900 834 Support On Click - DO NOT THINK THEY ARE SAFE – DO NOT LET THEM LOG ON TO YOUR PC!!! They called and said that they were calling from Microsoft windows service centre and that they could see that I had security problems on the PC - they took me to various areas of my PC to show me the location of the "malicious files" that they could “see”. All in all I spoke to 4 people all to make me believe that I had problems and that they would need to log on to my PC – they took me to a “log me in” page, provided a registration number that would hand over access to one of their technicians – thankfully I did not go through with it. I asked who was paying for their services and they this is where Raymond stumbled !! I took a telephone number to call back whilst I investigated – found this forum and I’m SO GLAD!!! Especially seeing the others on this link who have been charged £250!!! Only risk is that whilst they already had my name and number I did give them my e-mail address. I suspect I will get more calls from them but at least now I am prepared to deal with their call. Hopefully more people will find this thread before they provide details. There should be something more we can do... I can’t even find a number to speak to someone at Microsoft windows.
Great to hear you could call them! We have been unsuccessful in phoning them no number they provided or listed on the webpage works and thay told us they would charge $24 to see what was wrong and guess what we were charged $230 and told we had agreed to a 2yr support service. DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THESE PEOPLE READ THERE TERMS AND CONDITINS ON THE WEBSITE. Which we were not advised of in teh phone conversation. We have notified cunsumer affairs India and are in the process of retreiving the money hopefully.
They did strange things to my Browser and wiped my mails, BUT!! to all appearances the antivirus and anti-spyware software was still running as normal, and looked perfectly okay. They had altered it so it wasn't actually doing anything at all!!!!! I had to uninstall and reinstall it!!!! I think you had better check! This company has the means to remotely access computers and it looks as though certain staff members are using this to work a scam! I shudder to think that the people who own the company are actually encouraging staff to do this!
Had the same call at 15.19 today (24th March 2009)from an Indian guy saying much the same as other contibutors have stated.Obviously a scam of some kind. Wanted me to provide remote access to my computer. I refused and he said goodbye.
I have a similar story - A Microsoft technician CID 0011342101 saying he was a Microsoft support technician and I had set a error report saying my computer was running slow and have viruses and the like - Alarm bells rang so I asked for a return #0280147593 and his Name which is Ricky. I know I got a virus recently that pops up web site and I installed a few things to get ride of it one being Malwarebytes which is interesting as someone mentioned it - could this be the real source of the problem? The virus runs a process under the taskmanager called iexplore.exe (Not the webbrowser, but uses the same name) I usually shut it down but today I didn't and got the phone call. I wonder still how they got my number as I have very few details they could use to get it, I'm wonder if they could call out somehow and use CID to get it then use a reverse phone directtoy to get my name, which they only knew the surname against my phone which is different from me my ISP details and anything else relating to my computer, which is why I suspect CID.
I had a call from Nick, an Indian sounding man, this morning, informing me that he was calling from Microsoft service and that my computor had been corrupted but not to worry he was going to help me !! He asked me to look at certain files which did show errors and warnings and frightened me into thinking I had a major problem. He then wanted access to my computor to fix the problem and asked me to type in a "log me in " code ...... I was very apprehensive so asked for his number to call him back . I checked this out with my support company who informed me that it was in fact a scam of sorts ... Nick even phoned me back and argued the fact that I had mis understood the call.... I don't think so !!
That is ok for you to say "what a giggle". You probably know a bit about computers, but there are lots of people out there who know nothing about them and only know how to use them. If you told them the internet is housed in a space station orbiting the moon via a radio link to Washington they would not know anything different! There are people out there who are elderly and who have had computers bought for them to keep in touch, and their knowledge is very limited. Also those who are new to computing. These are the people these [***] prey on!
I just got the same call. His persistence raised red flags. Not only that, but the symptoms he claimed I was suffering from (slow Internet, pop ups) weren't true. I saw this site and told him no thanks.
Immediately call your credit card company and request a chargeback.Tell them you are reporting this to the local police. Also call the phone provider - is it Telstra?
